***SAFE 06/15/17***A volunteer writes: Ridley Scott once said, “Life isn’t black and white. It’s a million gray areas, don’t you find?” If you are looking to add a little life to your home, Rocco is a handsome chunk of gray kitty goodness. With golden eyes, this shy guy looks out as if to say, “If only I had a safe place to call my own, I could tell you my story.” This young guy is scared in the shelter, and would likely, over time, come out of his furry shell. If you are looking to be a patient and understanding friend, please visit Rocco at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. He is waiting for his new furever home.

With golden eyes, this shy guy looks out as if to say, “If only I had a safe place to call my own, I could tell you my story.” This young guy may be uncomfortable in the shelter, but he does appreciate the occasional petting. For now, he is acting like an independent, I-am-not-that-needy kind of cat that appeals to like minds. But it is likely that, over time, he will be comfortable enough to seek a bit more. If you are a patient and understanding friend looking for a cute and furry housemate, visit Rocco at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. He is waiting for his new furever home.
06/12/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Rocco was brought in as a stray so we cannot speak to his behavior in his previous home. During intake, he allowed all petting and handling. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: In cubby, hisses when door opened ENRICHMENT NOTES: 6/8/17 – Lots of room noise today, seemed very intimidated. Crouched at back of cubby as usual, eyes dilated. Tolerated pets, but lots of lip licking and shifting in place. Ate treats when left alone. Sprayed feliway. 6/11/17 – Very agitated today, due to room noise again? At back of cubby as usual, tense posture, eyes dilated, pressed into corner. Started hissing when door opened. Flinched and hissed again when pet, then ate treats in my presence. Sprayed feliway. 6/12/17 – Still a little agitated, seems to be deteriorating. At back of cubby, eyes dilated, hunched low. Started hissing on approach. Hissed again when door opened. Lay in place, lowered head and closed eyes when pet, held immobile throughout interaction EVALUATION: Cage Condition: Cage is neat Reaction to assessor: Rocco looks at the assessor with dilated eyes, and hisses. Reaction when softly spoken to: Rocco remains crouched at the back of his cubby and hisses again. Reaction to cage door opening: Rocco becomes tense and alert. Reaction to touch: Rocco hunches lower in place, lowers his head, and does not respond to touch. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Laid back VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Timid, Skittish, Shy POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: – Fearful BEHAVIOR SUMMARY: Rocco tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. He may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home. RECOMMENDATIONS: – Experienced, adult home only ?
