Details on my behavior are…
Behavior Condition: 5. Red
KNOWN HISTORY:: Brownie was brought in without information on his behavior history or tendencies in a home environment
MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:: 01/27/18 Distance increasing behaviors
ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 01/28/18 Crouched in litterbox, body tense and ears flattened. Hissing and growling upon approach. Strikes when I lift the cage cover. Uncomfortable, needs more time to adjust. Not interested in treats at the moment. 01/29/18 Standing in back of kennel, body and face tense. Hisses continuously when cage cover is lifted. Very uncomfortable, limited interaction due to stress. I left him some treats and lowered the cage cover back down. 01/30/18 Hiding underneath his kuranda bed. Not open to interacting at all. He hisses and arches his back when approached; gives clear warnings. I offered him tuna and left him along.
Cage Condition:: Cage is neat
Reaction to assessor:: Brownie was curled up in the back of the kennel, hiding underneath the kuranda bed. He hisses upon approach, then rises up and arches his back.
Reaction when softly spoken to:: Brownie’s ears bend flat, his pupils become dilated and he hisses when spoken to softly.
Reaction to cage door opening:: Brownie quickly lunges forward and tries to swipe at the assessor’s hand when he tries to open the door.
Reaction to touch:: Brownie displays distance increasing behaviors and currently doesn’t allow any petting or handling.
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Laid back
VOCAL:: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: : Independent
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful
Potential challenges comments:: Brownine has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : New hope only
Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable
RECOMMENDATIONS:: None
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Brownie is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and may require further investigation before placement in a home. He has tried to swat, is extremely fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
