*** SAFE 02/01/18 *** 1-Year Old Pretty Calico – KALLY! Not Adjusting Well In Shelter, Nervous Girl NEEDS OUT ASAP!
Brooklyn Center
Hello, my name is Kally. My animal id is #19056. I am a desexed female calico cat at the Brooklyn Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years old. – P
I came into the shelter as a stray on 24-Jan-2018.
Kally is at risk for behavior reasons. Kally is very scared and nervous in the shelter; she shrinks away from touch and attempts to flee. We suggest Kally would be best suited to a cat experienced, adult only, home. Medically, we have no concerns for Kally, who presents as a healthy cat.
My medical notes are…

MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:: 01/24/18 Observed Behavior – will flee, shrinks from touch but easy to examine
ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 01/25/18 Standing in back of kennel behind litterbox, body tense. Eyes dart around the room as I open the cubby door and she licks her lips. Tolerates petting along her head and body while turning her head slowly to watch my hand, eyes wide. Shifts weight. Needs more time to adjust. 01/28/18 Crouched in litterbox, body and face tense. Litterbox has been all chewed up along the sides. She remains very still as I open the kennel door and as I push the bear-claw towards her with a treat on it. Once it pauses in front of her she hisses and swats it. Nervous and uncomfortable, not interested in treats today. Not doing too well – behavior seems to be declining. Placement may be in her best interest at this point.

Reaction to assessor:: Kally was curled up in the back of her cubby, feint sleeping.
Reaction when softly spoken to:: Kally continues to feint sleep.
Reaction to cage door opening:: Kally becomes stiff and alert and presses her body against the back wall.
Reaction to touch:: Kally focuses on the assessor’s hand and attempts to flee. When unable to flee, she hisses and focuses on the assessor’s hand. She allows gentle petting with a slow approach, but hisses and swipes near the assessor’s hand when overwhelmed.
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Mellow
VOCAL:: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: : Shy ,Skittish,Independent
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful
Potential challenges comments:: Kally has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide her with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Experienced, adult only
Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Kally tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. She may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his or her new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home who understands this cat may need time to warm up to her new home and family at her own pace.
