06/06/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Zoro was brought in as a stray, so we cannot speak to his behavior in his previous home. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Growling but allowed handling ENRICHMENT NOTES: 06/04/17 Lying in back of kennel with a low body, ears flattened. He hisses when spoken to and tolerates petting while lowering his body. Turns head and hisses as the bear-claw passes along his back, body very tense. Needs more time to adjust. 06/05/17 Lying in back of kennel with a low body, head resting on ground. He flits his head when I open the kennel door and gives one hard hiss, making eye contact. He hisses and tenses his body as the bear-claw comes forward. He relaxes a bit when I place a treat in front of him – ears come forward and he sniffs and eats the treat in front of me. He’s not read to be touched yet but I spend some time using the clicker and giving him treats so he can associate the sound with something good. He will come to the front to eat treats but will hiss at me when he’s finished. Needs more time to adjust. 06/06/17 Hiding behind blue cage cover, tense and starts growling when I approach the kennel. Low body posture, hisses when spoken to softly. Not open to interacting, shifts around and hisses when I tried touching him with the bear claw. Seems very stressed. Kept the interaction short. Gave him some treats and sprayed feliway. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Laid back VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Skittish POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: Fearful – Zoro has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Placement with a New Hope partner – Zoro is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and may require further investigation before placement in a home. He is extremely fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
