06/10/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Cleopatra was brought in as a stray, so we cannot speak to her behavior in her previous home. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Feral–jumping, trying to bite, frantic hissing. limited exam ENRICHMENT NOTES: 06/08/17 Sitting crouched towards back of kennel, back turned towards neonates. She hisses each time I reach towards her. Tolerates being pet on the head with a tense body while squinting eyes and hissing. Does not wish to interact with her babies. One of them is very cold. Needs more time to adjust. Sprayed feliway. Babies were taken away to be bottle fed. EVALUATION: Cage Condition: Cage recently cleaned Reaction to assessor: Cleopatra was tense and lying flat in her litter box. Reaction when softly spoken to: Cleopatra lips licked then focused her attention on all the assessor’s movements. Reaction to cage door opening: Cleopatra’s eyes dart around and she very wary. Reaction to touch: Cleopatra hissed and sunk lower into the litter box when the assessor extended his hand out. She started breathing more rapidly, shifted around and flinched when touched. She seems very uncomfortable and allowed very limited contact. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Laid back VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Skittish POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: Fearful – Cleopatra has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide her with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experienced, adult home only – Cleopatra tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. She may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his/her new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
