06/11/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Stella was brought in with limited information on her behavior in her previous home. Her previous owner reports she has been exhibiting fractious behavior and has been hissing and swatting whenever a member of the family is near her. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Looking around in carrier. Slightly tense. Once on table, tries to run away but once restrained, stays still and allows all handing. EVALUATION: Cage Condition: Cage is neat Reaction to assessor: Stella growls loudly when the assessor approaches her kennel. She has a cage cover, so when the cover is lifted, she growls louder and yowls. She is inside a cat den and focuses on the assessor. Reaction when softly spoken to: Stella yowls in response and continues to growl, focusing on the assessor with dilated eyes from within her den. Reaction to cage door opening: Stella continues to vocalize, but remains inside her den. Reaction to touch: Stella does not allow contact; she hisses, growls, and yowls with any movement and will strike from within her den when petting is attempted. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Cannot evaluate VOCAL: Talkative CHARACTER TYPE: Independent POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: – Fearful – Stella has displayed fearful behavior during her behavior evaluation and displays distance-increasing behaviors with extended handling. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide her with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. RECOMMENDATIONS: – Placement with a rescue partner – Stella is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. She has tried to swat, is extremely fearful in the shelter environment, and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. She may have a known history of behavioral issues that need to be addressed. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
