SAFE 4/25/16 A volunteer writes: Shadow is a bit timid in the shelter environment. His surrender notes say he lived with kids and was affectionate and playful. So, I take a chance and reach over to pet him. Well, we are both glad I did. He happily accepts cheek scratches and chin rubs. Shadow may be ready for a quieter home at this point in his life. So if you have a little space on your lap for a sweet middle aged guy, please ask for Shadow. He is eager to get out of the noisy shelter and into a loving peaceful home. Plus, he’s already neutered, so he can go home with you today!

Behavior:
Shadow’s former owner stated he lived with 6 children during his life, from babies and older. He was usually relaxed, affectionate, playful, and tolerant with them. Even though stated he’s been a little shy and low energy, and doesn’t play much anymore.
Reaction to assessor: Shadow looks tense in his cage when approached by the assessor.
Reaction to door opening: Shadow remains crouched position with head up at the back of the cage, alert with eyes wide open.
Reaction to touch: Shadow seems unsure with the stroke at first, but began to slowly lean into the assessor’s hand and appreciate the petting on the head and body.
Reaction to Being Picked up: He calmly jumps back into the cage.
Placement determination: Average
Shadow interacts with the observer, appreciates attention, is easy to handle and tolerates all petting. This cat is showing behavior appropriate for new or experienced cat parents.
Please take note: Shadow’s previous owners also reports that he has been defecating outside the litterbox for the past few months on the floor (in the hallway) of the house. We are unaware of what, if any, modifications steps were taken to try and address this behavior in the home, so we cannot be sure what the trigger may have been or if this behavior may continue in a future home. However, we recommend that potential adopters be comfortable with management and modification techniques for elimination outside the litterbox should this behavior continue in a home environment.
Enrichment
3/3/16
At the back, eyes dilated, seemed nervous. Lay in place, allowed all pets, some lip licking. Sprayed feliway.
3/6/16
Huge improvement! Very calm and affectionate today. Lay in place, leaned enthusiastically into pets. Very sweet.

BASIC INFO
Shadow is an 8 year old neutered DSH cat. His family got him as a gift from a friend when he was a small kitten and had to surrender him due to lack of time.
Shadow was very friendly/outgoing, playful, and medium energy. For the past year, he’s been a little shy and low energy, and doesn’t play much anymore. Some of the older children in his home have recently moved out and he’s home alone most of the time. He’s been occasionally walking into walls over the past few months.
SOCIALIZATION
Shadow lived with 6 children during his life, from babies and older. He was usually relaxed, affectionate, playful, and tolerant with them. For the past year, he’s been swatting people when they walk by or try to shoo him away. He’s broken skin a few times doing this, but not in the past 10 days. He also sometimes bit/nipped his family members softly over the past year, never breaking skin. He lived with another male cat in the past and avoided him. Dogs have visited and he hides from them. If they corner him, he may scratch them in attempts to flee. This may have broken skin but hasn’t happened recently.
BEHAVIOR
Shadow enjoys being picked up and held. He doesn’t mind when someone bathes him, brushes him, trims/files his nails, brushes his teeth, cleans his ears, puts him in a carrier, or wakes him up. He’s been stealing unattended food over the past year. Shadow was litter trained and didn’t have accidents for most of his life. He used an uncovered litterbox with Tidy Cat Multi-cat clay litter. For the past few months, he’s been defecating in a hallway on the floor a couple of times per month.
FOR A NEW FAMILY TO KNOW
Shadow’s family describes him as friendly, affectionate, quiet, and low energy. He follows them, comes when called, and cuddles on their chests. He greets his family and visitors when they arrive at the door. He plays with balls, toy cars, and hair barrettes and bows. He lived inside and slept with his owners, burrowed inside blankets. He ate dry 9 Lives cat food and drank water from the sink. He got white rice as a treat. He had vertical carpeted and horizontal cardboard scratching posts but scratched the bed, wooden furniture, and walls in the corners.
INTAKE
Shadow was tense with wide eyes but tolerant while I picked him up, scanned him (+), collared him, positioned him for pictures, and put him in a carrier. He looked around on the table. He didn’t retreat, vocalize, or resist.
