INTAKE INFO:
Lady laid with a relaxed body in her carrier. When her carrrier was unzipped, she became somewhat tense and looked around the room. The couneslor was able to pick her up and placed her on the on table. The couneslor collared Lady but she was pulling her head away from the couenslor but held still for her photo. When the couneslor attempted to put Lady in the carrier, Lady stuggled and began to growl. She was given a few mintues on the counter to calm down but she continued to growl. A towel was placed around Lady’s front legs and she was picked up and placed in the carrier. She did not swat or struggle, just growled.
BEHAVIOR:
KNOWN HISTORY:
Lady was brought in as a stray, so we cannot speak to her behavior in her previous home. She was relaxed inside her carrier during intake, but became tense when her carrier was opened and started looking around the room. She allowed the counselor to pick her up, but was hesitant of being collared and pulled her head away. She began to growl when petting was attempted and continued to growl with further handling, but did not struggle or swat.
MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:
Observed Behavior – Hissing when approached cage
BEHAVIOR NOTES:
03/09/17
Very vocal, hissing and grumbling, shifting around a lot. Gave her a bowl of wet food and she came to the front to eat. Softened a little but still isn’t ready for a lot of interaction. Needs time and positive attention.

Very vocal, hissing and grumbling, shifting around a lot. But she’s a social housecat who needs to build her confidence and establish trust. She’s apparently been through a lot of change in a short period of time, so it’s understandable that she’s wary. Gave her a bowl of wet food and she came to the front to eat. Softened a little but still isn’t ready for a lot of interaction. Needs time and positive attention. Sprayed Feliway and gave some treats.
03/13/17
Sitting by the front, calm and relaxed. She lifts paw initially when offering my hand, but with a slow approach, she leans in for rubs and allows pets on body. She tenses up from time to time and appears wary of her surroundings but seems to appreciate attention, rolling over and rubbing against her cage furnishings when spoken to.
03/15/17
Sitting by the front, calm and relaxed. Looks around and slowly gets up to interact with me when the cage door opens. She rubs her body against me, nudges me with her head, and begins to purr. She allows pick up, remaining calm, and will continue rubbing on me as long as I go slow. Her tail sways a bit, but doesn’t react with slow movements. Recommend in cage interactions in adoptions.
03/18/17
Comes forward to greet, chirps then rubs cheeks against door. Solicits attention, rubs up and allows petting along body. Tail sways back and forth but she doesn’t display any further reaction. Food motivated, loves tuna. Purrs softly throughout interaction. A bit tense when picked up but relaxed in my arms. Doing great!
EVALUATION:
Cage Condition: Cage is neat
Reaction to assessor: Lady was lying down with her paws tucked underneath her body, calm and relaxed.
Reaction when softly spoken to: Lady pokes her head forward and sniffs around, curious.
Reaction to cage door opening: Lady gets up and stretches.
Reaction to touch: Lady was hesitant at first, lifting her paw as the assessor extends their hand, but after some coaxing she places her paw down and sniffs the hand. She leans her head in for gentle petting. She is cautious, but with slow movements she allows rubs on her head and body. She rolls over after and solicits attention by rubbing against her cage furnishings. She still appears wary of her surroundings, but appears to appreciate attention as long as you go slow.
ACTIVITY LEVEL: Moderate
VOCAL: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: Timid, Sweet
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:
– Fearful – Lady has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and would growl with extended handling. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide her with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus.
RECOMMENDATIONS:
– Experienced, adult home only – Lady tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
