SAFE 3/28/18 Gibbles is a 3 year old, DSH male who was adopted from BACC August 2016. He has no known health issues or injuries and last saw the vet this past summer. He was surrendered due to his consistent litter box issues in the home.

Lying in front of kennel, body and face soft. Ears are forward. He vocalizes when spoken to. Tilts ears when kennel door opens and tolerates petting briefly while tensing his body and sitting upright. Walks through his portal with a low body and tail. Unsure – needs more time to adjust.

Is this cat having litter box issues?YesIf yes, Please elaborate:Gibbles has been urinating and defecating outside of his litter box for the past year. The owner has tried changing the type of box, adding more boxes in the home, and trying different litters. She had taken him to the vet to assure there were no underlying medical reasons for the accidents and he was cleared.

How is this cat around strangers?Gibbles is friendly and relaxed when meeting new people.
How is this cat around children?Gibbles had lived with 2 children in his previous home and was relaxed and playful with them. The owner stated that her younger son has a mental disability and Gibbles was very calm and well behaved around him.
How is this cat around other cats?Gibbles has not spent time around other cats before.
How is this cat around dogs?Gibbles has been introduced to family members dogs before but was fearful and would run and hide from them. He would do best in a home with no other pets.
Behavior NotesGibble’s owner always took him to the groomer to be shaved as he is overweight and cannot properly groom himself. He tolerates being picked up for very short periods of time but does not like to be held. He will struggle when his owner puts him in a carrier.

Has this cat ever had any medical issues?NoMedical NotesGibbles is currently overweight and will need to be on a diet.
For a New Family to KnowGibbles is described as being friendly, playful and talkative. He likes to sit near the family on the couch but will not sit on their lap. He has been an indoor cat and sleeps anywhere in the home. He likes to play with string and wand toys and catnip toys. He eats both wet and dry food, science diet brand, and is used to using both covered and uncovered boxes with any kind of litter. He likes to scratch on carpet.
Behavior Notes:Gibbles was nervous during intake and kept a low body. He allowed for handling but did struggle when counselor went to put him back in the carrier.

Subjective: BAR. No csvd. Urine in litter box but no bm noted yet. Settling into shelter well. Behavior reports no issues.

Oral Exam: adult dentition
PLN: No enlargements noted
H/L: NSR, NMA, CRT < 2, Lungs clear, eupneic
ABD: Non painful, no masses palpated, very large habitus so difficult to deeply palpate
U/G: MN
MSI: Ambulatory x 4, skin free of parasites, no masses noted, healthy hair coat, overweight
CNS: mentation appropriate – no signs of neurologic abnormalities
Rectal: Rectum is very erythematous and irritated with pasty feces seeping out, rectal revealed thickened anal sacs that were easily expressed

Plan: Continue to monitor while at BACC
Discussed case with behavior-will monitor for BM and U. Consider workup for inappropriate elimination if continues in the shelter
