03/07/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Chowder was brought in as a stray, so we cannot speak to her behavior in her previous home. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Tries to flee. Very scared. Had to examine in net – allowed limited exam. No growling. ENRICHMENT NOTES: 03/05/17 Very scared, cowering in litter box, trying to be invisible. Not ready for a lot of interaction yet. Sprayed Feliway and added a screen cover to one side of her double kennel. 03/06/17 Scheduled for a vet check today to check to see if pregnant. Cowering in litter box, tense and wary. Not open to much interaction. Sprayed Feliway, left one side of kennel covered with a screen, gave some treats. EVALUATION: Cage Condition: No change Reaction to assessor: Chowder was curled up tight at the back of the kennel. Reaction when softly spoken to: Chowder focuses her attention on the assessor then starts to lip lick. Reaction to cage door opening: Chowder is alert and remains motionless. Reaction to touch: Chowder’s eyes widen and she seems very wary of her surroundings when the assessor approaches. She tolerates petting on her head and body with a slow gentle approach and remains immobile throughout the entire interaction. After a few soft passes along her body she lip licks then turns her head away. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Laid back VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Skittish POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: Fearful- Chowder has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide her with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experienced, adult home only- Chowder tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. She may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to her new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home who understands this cat may need time to warm up to her new home and family at her own pace.
