10/31/2016 WEB MEMO
Avolunteer writes: Bertha and her sibling, Lucy (A1094220) were picked up off the mean streets of New York, and as tiny kittens it’s no surprise that they are a little wary of their new environment, relying on each other for support. Both kittens – especially Bertha, who seems to be the leader of the pair – are receptive to toys and will happily bat at and adorably maul a feather if you wave it around for them. Bertha seems like she’s still trying to figure people out, but is making progress and already seems more comfortable with people than she was when she first showed up.
10/24/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Bertha was brought in as a stray, so we cannot speak to her behavior in her previous home. She had a tense body upon intake and appeared fearful of the counselor. She allowed all handling to be conducted, however, during the intake process. The medical team reports she attempted to flee, but also allowed all handling. Reaction to assessor: Bertha was curled up with her sibling by the back of the kennel. Reaction when softly spoken to: Bertha looks at the assessor and blinks softly. Reaction to cage door opening: Bertha gets up and slowly walks to the other side of the kennel crouching over. Reaction to touch: Bertha hissed at the assessor’s hand, but lowers her head and accepts petting on her entire body. She doesn’t seem to mind petting, but will close her eyes. Reaction to pick up: Bertha’s body is a bit tense, but she allows handling and remains calm. Behavior Determination: Experienced Bertha tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter. She may need time to warm up to her new home. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents, who will allow her appropriate adjustment time as she acclimates to her new home.
