05/17/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Zoe was brought in as a stray, so we cannot speak to her behavior in her previous home. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Hissing, biting, scratching ENRICHMENT NOTES: 05/15/17 Crouched in back of kennel. Watches me as I approach, alert with ears tilted forward. She backs away and flattens her ears when I reach towards her with the bear-claw. She tolerates touch briefly while retreating to the other side of the kennel slowly with a low body and tail down. Needs more time to adjust. Came forward to eat tuna that I placed in her kennel. 05/16/17 Lying with a low body in litterbox, may be resting/sleeping. Flicks ear towards me when spoken to. She stands up and stretches when I open the kennel door, coming forward with a raised tail. She allows petting along her head and body, leaning in and head-butting my hand. Ate all treats given. Has warmed up a lot since yesterday. 05/17/16 Relaxed, lying down in her litter box. Comes forward to sniff, leans in for attention. Brushes her cheeks against the kennel door. Gives soft head butts when rubbed. She rolls over on her side and solicits attention. Her tail flickers slightly with continued contact. Seems to prefer soft, gentle pets. The moment I started rubbing her or applied any pressure she started to groan. She quickly whipped around, hissed then swatted. She whines when picked up but tolerates handling. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Moderate VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Easy going POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: Pet-induced aggression – Zoe Initially Zoe solicits petting and attention, but after a few soft passes over the body she begins to hiss and will swat at the assessor. This may be a sign of petting-induced aggression, where repeated physical contact results in discomfort for the cat, or it may be a sign of overstimulation. As a result of this observed behavior we recommend adopters who are familiar with signs of behavioral arousal and agitation in cats, so that interactions can be ended before Zoe becomes reactive. Treats should be used to reward appropriate responses to physical attention. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experienced, adult home only – Zoe may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to her new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
