Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Turnip was brought in as a stray, so we cannot speak to his behavior in his previous home. He hissed and lunged inside his carrier during intake, attempting to flee when transferring him into another carrier. He continued to display distance-increasing behaviors throughout the intake process and during his initial medical exam. The enrichment team reports he was inside a den during their first interaction and focuses on them through a peep hole on the den. They were unable to coax him out of the den with food or treats. He remained in his den the next day, but hisses and growls when interaction was attempted. Reaction to assessor: Turnip was inside a den upon approach. Reaction when softly spoken to: Turnip looks out through a hole on the den and focuses on the assessor with dilated eyes. Reaction to cage door opening: Turnip begins to growl. Reaction to touch: Turnip does not allow touch; he hisses and strikes at the assessor’s hand when near the den opening, and begins to growl loudly. With any movement near the den, he swats from inside the den. Behavior Determination: New Hope Only Turnip is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. He has tried to swat and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
