ENRICHMENT:
**Enrichment Notes Continued**
05/06/17
Relaxed at the back of the kennel, didn’t get upset when I opened the kennel door. Sniffs hand and allows petting/ attention. Social and sweet. Starts purring the more you interact with him.
05/07/17
Comes forward when called, tail raised. Meows softly and leans into my hand, allowing petting along his head and body. He keeps poking his head out of the kennel – wants to get out, or is perhaps curious about the room. I Have no problem when I have to gently lift him or push him back to keep him from escaping. Remained relaxed and enjoyed petting for the duration of the session, leaning in and purring softly. Ate all treats given. Doing well!
05/08/17
Sitting crouched in kennel, facing towards the wall. He stands up and comes forward when I speak, tail raised and meowing soflty. He allows petting along his head and body, leaning into my hand with his cheeks. Stands on back legs and tries to climb up onto my shoulders. Keeps trying to get past me to get out of the kennel. I am able to distract him with petting – enjoys and allows all petting for the rest of the session. Likes treats and catnip. Doing well!
05/09/17
Sitting crouched in kennel, facing forward. He meows and comes to the front when spoken to. Allows petting along head and body with his tail raised. May be getting restless – wants to get out of his kennel. He ears all treats given – good appetite. Doing well!
05/10/17
At front of kennel when I approach. Vocalizes softly and head-butts door when spoken to. He allows petting along his head and body, leaning in and raising his tail. Remained soft and relaxed for duration of session. Doing well!
BEHAIVOR:
KNOWN HISTORY:
Spree was brought in as a stray, so we cannot speak to his behavior in his previous home. The previous owner reported Spree had bitten them when they attempted to pet him.
MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:
Observed behavior – Fractious, lunging and striking out. Will not allow handling
ENRICHMENT NOTES:
04/26/17
Crouched in back of kennel with wide eyes and ears tilted. He avoids my gaze and looks around the room when I speak to him, then hisses at the bear-claw as it approaches him. The hiss becomes a low whine and growl, and he watches the claw with wide eyes and mouth open – growling and whining – until it leaves his line of vision. Not ready for further interaction today, he’s very uncomfortable. Needs more time to adjust.
04/28/17
Low body posture, very wary of his surroundings. Backs away and hisses when the door opens. Offered him some treats. Slowly started to relax. Allows petting on his head with a very slow approach. Started clicker training him, very food motivated. Was head butting and allowing petting by the end of the session.
05/02/17
Makes eye contact and meows softly when spoken to. He allows petting along his head and body, leaning in gently and standing up to come forward to the front. Did clicker training – rewarded him with tuna every time he let me pet him. Did well this session.
EVALUATION:
Cage Condition: No change
Reaction to assessor: Spree meowed softly and appeared neutral
Reaction when softly spoken to: Spree meowed softly and came forward with his tail raised
Reaction to cage door opening: Spree greeted the assessor by the front
Reaction to touch: Spree allowed touch along his head and body, leaning in with his tail raised
Reaction to being picked up: Spree remained soft and allowed handling
ACTIVITY LEVEL: Mellow, Moderate
VOCAL: Somewhat chatty
CHARACTER TYPE: Timid initially, Affectionate, Curious
RECOMMENDATIONS:
– Experienced cat parent – Spree interacts with the observer, appreciates attention, is easy to handle and tolerates all petting. Although he is displaying behaviors appropriate for cat parents with an average amount of experience, due to an incident with his previous owner, we recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents. He may need time to warm up to his new home.
– No other cats OR multi-cat home with adopters experienced with introducing new cats – Spree remains social and easy to handle with his human caretakers, but please be aware that Spree may be uncomfortable around other cats. He has been noted to hiss and retreat from interactions whenever he notices a neighboring cat. Due to the described behaviors, we recommend Spree goes to a home with no other cats OR into a multi-cat home with cat parents experienced with introducing new cats slowly and gradually over a long period of time.
