03/15/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Lived Indoors Previously lived with: Adults Behavior toward strangers: Friendly and outgoing Behavior toward children: Unknown Behavior toward cats: Lived with another male cat and was relaxed and playful Behavior toward dogs: Unknown Bite or Scratch history: None Litter box training: Yes Energy level/descriptors: Friendly, affectionate, playful, and shy, with a medium activity level. Other notes: Doesn’t like having his nails trimmed or being given a bath. Struggles when going in a carrier and doesn’t like being picked up. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Allowed handling, friendly, playful ENRICHMENT NOTES: 03/13/17 Was given a cage cover for both sides of his kennel. He is quiet behind the covers, but becomes stiff and alert when the covers are lifted. He hisses when softly spoken to and focuses on me with dilated eyes. After some time, he blinks slowly and lip licks, looking around and backing away. Sprayed feliway and he relaxed a bit, but doesn’t seem ready to interact. Left alone for now. Later revisited and he appeared to have calmed down some. I put up a toy in his opposite kennel so I don’t startle him. He poked his head through from the portal and looked around, wide-eyed. He offered a quiet hiss, lip licked, and hissed again, but he didn’t do much beside look worried. EVALUATION: Cage Condition: No change Reaction to assessor: Socks was hiding in his feral den at the back of the kennel. Reaction when softly spoken to: Socks low growls, makes eye contact through the porthole and doesn’t get up or come forward when coaxed. Reaction to cage door opening: Socks remains motionless. Reaction to touch: Sock’s eyes become dilated and he arches his back when the assessor approaches him. He hissed when close by, lowered his head and raises his paw up as a warning when the assessor extended his hand out. His body is stiff/tense, he’s alert and currently doesn’t allow any handling. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Laid back VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Skittish
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: Fearful – Socks has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus. RECOMMENDATIONS: Placement with a New Hope partner- Socks is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and may require further investigation before placement in a home. He has tried to swat, is extremely fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
