07/18/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Sage was brought in as a stray, so we cannot speak to his behavior in his previous home. His finder was able to approach him, take him out of the crate and play with him. He was friendly around the finder’s younger children (children younger than teenagers) and was very friendly with the dog that he was found with. Finder stated that both animal would sleep together & eat together. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Hisses, growls, will try to swat/bite. EVALUATION: Cage Condition: No change Reaction to assessor: Sage arched his back and started hissing when the assessor lifted the cage cover up. Reaction when softly spoken to: Sage becomes hyper focused on the assessor, lip licks then starts yowling with wide dilated eyes. Reaction to cage door opening: Sage hisses and his entire body pilo-erects. Reaction to touch: Sage hisses, lunges forward and displays distance increasing behaviors when approached. He seems very uncomfortable and currently doesn’t tolerate any handling. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Laid back VOCAL: Talkative CHARACTER TYPE: Skittish POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: Fearful – Sage has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus. RECOMMENDATIONS: Placement with a New Hope partner – Sage is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and may require further investigation before placement in a home. He has tried to swat, bite, is extremely fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
