Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Pele was brought in as a stray, so we cannot speak to his behavior in his previous home. He was very upset during intake, hissing and swatting when approached. He also displayed distance-increasing behaviors during his initial medical exam. Reaction to assessor: Pele was lying down by the back, calm and relaxed. Reaction when softly spoken to: Pele becomes stiff, but he relaxes after a moment and looks at the assessor with almond-shaped eyes. Reaction to cage door opening: Pele slowly gets up and sits upright, shifting his weight back. Reaction to touch: Pele focuses on the assessor’s hand and lip licks, wrapping his tail tightly against his body. He shifts his focus from the assessor’s hand and towards the exit, appearing to want to flee. When petting was attempted, he quickly shifts away and lifts his paw to prepare to strike. Behavior Determination: New Hope Only Pele is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. He is extremely fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
