MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:: Observed Behavior – Docile
ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 12/17/17 Lying in litterbox with a low, tense body. Makes eye contact with wide eyes and tolerates petting along head and body while wrapping her tail around herself and flattening her ears. Turns head slowly to watch my hand pass along her back and begins to growl. Very tense. Needs more time to adjust. 12/18/17 Lying in litter box with a low, tense body. Makes eye contact when spoken to, then looks away. She tolerates petting along her head and body while lowering herself into her box further and flattening her ears. She turns her head to watch my hand while licking her lips. Does not eat treats during today’s session – possibly too nervous and focused on me. Needs more time to adjust. 12/19/17 Tense and wary- crouched in her litter box in the back of the kennel. She tenses up and becomes focused when I opened the door. Her eyes dart around and she slowly inches away. Tolerant of touch, but very uncomfortable and remains immobile. Ears bend flat and she lip licks as she looks around the kennel. Offered treats but she showed no interest.
Cage Condition:: Cage is recently cleaned
Reaction to assessor:: Mystique was lying down by the front, but becomes alert and looks around with wide eyes when approached.
Reaction when softly spoken to:: Mystique retreats to the back and wraps her tail tightly against her body.
Reaction to cage door opening:: Mystique becomes stiff and alert, and looks around.
Reaction to touch:: Mystique was hesitant of touch and attempts to shift away to avoid contact, but allows soft strokes as she’s slinking away. She lowers her body when sitting down by the back corner, allowing petting all over her body. She remains tense, but seems more wary of her surroundings.
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Mellow
VOCAL:: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: : Shy ,Timid,Independent
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful
Potential challenges comments:: Mystique has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and appears uncomfortable with extended handling. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide her with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Experienced, adult only
Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Mystique tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. She may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to her new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
