***SAFE 05/16/17*** KC NEEDS A HERO TONIGHT!! Shelter staff wrote: Young guy KC’s previous family described him as playful, friendly, and affectionate, and while we believe in a less stressful environment he would be able to let his true colors show, he has shown tendencies of becoming overstimulated during his time here at the Brooklyn Care Center. KC has also displayed distance-increasing behavior in the shelter environment, so the Enrichment department believes he would benefit most from placement through a New Hope partner prior to placement in an adopter’s home. YOU MUST RESERVE THROUGH A NEW HOPE RESCUE BY NOON!

05/06/2017 PET PROFILE MEMO
05/06/17 14:45 BASIC INFO KC A1111207 is a 3 year old dsh cat. He is being surrendered to the shelter because the owner has too many pets and an adult son is moving back to the room where KC slept. KC was a gift to the owner from friends 3 years ago. Kc has not been to a veterinarian. He does not have any apparent health concerns. SOCIALIZATION KC is very friendly with strangers. He has not lived with young children, but has been around teenagers and he gets along very well with them. He is tolerant and respectful. He plays gentle with adults. KC has lived with another male cat and 2 female cats. He was relaxed and playful, but would try to mate with all of them. KC has never scratched anyone. BEHAVIOR KC’s only behavior issue is that he likes to scratch all over the home. He rode quietly in a car. KC grooms himself, does not allow you to bathe him. He allows you to pick him up and hold him. He did struggle when being placed in a carrier and had to be placed in a clothes hamper to be brought to ACCNYC. He is not bothered if disturbed while sleep. FOR A NEW FAMILY TO KNOW KC is best described as friendly, affectionate and playful. He has a medium activity level. When home, he follows you around. He enjoys playing with any cat toy. KC is an indoor only cat. He slept inside of a bedroom, on the bed by himself. He was fed Purina cat chow dry food. He uses a regular litter box with Fresh Step cat litter. He has a carpeted scratching post, but uses furniture to scratch on. BEHAVIOR DURING INTAKE KC allowed petting, but became over stimulated, and hissed at counselor. Quickly went into bottom kennel.

Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Lived Indoors Previously lived with: Adults, another male cat and 2 female cats Behavior toward strangers: Friendly Behavior toward children: Spent time around teenagers and got along well with them. Behavior toward cats: Relaxed and playful, but would try to mate with all of them. Behavior toward dogs: Unknown Bite or Scratch history: None Litter box training: Yes Energy level/descriptors: Friendly, affectionate and playful with a medium activity level. Other notes: Doesn’t mind being picked up/held and struggles when placed in a carrier. He enjoys playing with toys and had a carpet scratching post, but scratched on the furniture instead. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Limited exam in net. Screaming, trying to bite, and striking ENRICHMENT NOTES: 05/08/17 Lying with a relaxed body in center of kennel. He vocalizes softly as I approach and rolls over onto his side when spoken to, then comes forward to the front and head-butts kennel door. He hisses when I open the cage door and retreats to the back, assuming a crouched body position and flattening his ears. He hisses again when pet along the head and tolerates petting along his body, hissing and turning his head to watch the bear-claw while lowering himself. Showing some conflicting behavior -may have potential to warm up given more time. Sprayed feliway. EVALUATION: Cage Condition: Cage is slightly re-arranged Reaction to assessor: KC was sprawled out across the front of the kennel and starts to grumbles when approached. Reaction when softly spoken to: KC rolls over on his side then starts to hiss and raises his paw up as a warning. Reaction to cage door opening: KC retreats to the back and continues to hiss. Reaction to touch: KC’s ears bend flat, his back arches and he hisses with his tail pilo-erect when approached. He displays distance increasing behaviors and currently doesn’t allow any handling. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Laid back VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Skittish RECOMMENDATIONS: Placement with a New Hope partner – KC is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and may require further investigation before placement in a home. He has tried to swat, is extremely fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
