Animal’s demeanor with you – did not handle the animal due to transferring straight from the trap to the den. The kitten was brought in due to there being an influx of stray cats in the area. He explained that he is tnr certified, but cannot find a vet to do the surgery on the weekends and that is only time he could trap the cats.

06/14/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Jupiter was brought in as a stray, so there is no information on his behavior in his previous home. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Observed Behavior – Bit finger during exam ENRICHMENT NOTES: 06/06/17 Jupiter was pressed against the back of the cage with his litter mate. He hissed when I opened the cage and fled away from my hand, but did allow some touch. It did not appear to be comforting to him, so I kept the interaction short. EVALUATION: Cage Condition: Cage is slightly re-arranged Reaction to assessor: Jupiter was squeezed by the back, curled up in the corner. Reaction when softly spoken to: Jupiter lowers his head and attempts to hide. Reaction to cage door opening: Jupiter remains motionless. Reaction to touch: Jupiter hisses and attempts to avoid contact. He allows gentle petting with an extremely slow approach, but will hiss and attempts to flee again. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Cannot evaluate VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Skittish, Independent POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: – Fearful – Kitten socialization – Jupiter is a young cat that may not have had many interactions with humans from an early age. He may be apprehensive of people, but he may warm up to people if socialized properly. Kittens less than 8 weeks of age can be socialized by almost anyone; however, kittens between 2-4 months may require more time and skill in order for them to be comfortable around people. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor to learn more about socialization techniques. RECOMMENDATIONS: – Experienced, adult home only – Jupiter tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. He is more independent and will need time to warm up to his new home and family. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
