08/16/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Lived Indoors Previously lived with: Adults and a 4 yr. old child Behavior toward strangers: Shy and hisses when someone approaches her Behavior toward children: Mostly kept to herself Behavior toward cats: Lived with a 16yr old cat and was relaxed and gentle Behavior toward dogs: Unknown Bite or Scratch history: None Litter box training: Yes, but she’s been having accidents in the home for the past 2 weeks Energy level/descriptors: mellow, aloof, and shy with a medium activity level Other notes: She doesn’t like to be held and will hiss and will struggle and hisses to go into carrier MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Eagerly comes out of the carrier but starts hissing with any restraint. Unpredictable with medical handling. Had to use net for blood draw and vaccines ENRICHMENT NOTES: 08/15/17 Lying in litterbox with a flat body, face down and lowered onto kennel floor. She tolerates slow and gentle petting along her head and body while lifting her head and hissing. Turns to watch the bear-claw with flat ears. Continuing to hiss and growl after kennel door has been closed. May be uncomfortable due to medical condition. Sprayed feliway. EVALUATION: Cage Condition: Cage recently cleaned Reaction to assessor: Chrissy was crouched in the back of the cage with her head lowered and her tail wrapped around her body. Reaction when softly spoken to: Chrissy lifts her head up to make eye contact then stress meows. Reaction to cage door opening: Chrissy lip licks and arches her back. Reaction to touch: Chrissy backs away and stress meows when the assessor extends his hand forward to make contact. She hisses, flinches slightly when touched on her head and takes a few minutes to warm up. She starts to slow blink then tilts her head allowing petting and rubs on her head and cheeks. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Laid back VOCAL: Talkative CHARACTER TYPE: Skittish Please note that this cat is being treated for a medical condition at the time of evaluation. It is difficult to determine at this time how the medical condition may be affecting the behavior.
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: Fearful – Chrissy has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and may dislike certain types of handling. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide her with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus. Inappropriate elimination – Chrissy’s previous owner reports that she was eliminating (urinating and defecating) outside the litter box for the past 2 weeks, but we are unaware of what, if any, modification steps were taken to try and address this behavior. Please note as well that Chrissy has been diagnosed with and is being treated for Mammary tumors in the care center, which may be influencing the urination behavior. We cannot be sure whether this behavior will continue in a home environment after treatment for the medical condition has been completed, but we recommend that potential adopters be comfortable with management and modification techniques for elimination outside the litter box should this behavior continue in a home environment. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experienced, adult home only – Chrissy tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. Chrissy may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to her new home. She may have some behavioral issues that will need to be addressed in the home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
