Hello, my name is Cashmere. My animal id is #14262. I am a desexed female black cat at the Brooklyn Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 9 years 2 weeks old. – P
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 21-Nov-2017, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- moving – no pets allowed.
Original Location: 11226
Cashmere is at risk for behavior concerns (Experience determination). She allows regular petting on her head but is very uncomfortable with any handling beyond. Cashmere is currently only an in kennel interaction due to her handling difficulties.

Hissing, swatting, lunging in carrier, sedated with telazol 0.1ml IM Evidence of Cruelty seen – no Evidence of Trauma seen – no Objective P = WNL R = WNL BCS 6/9 EENT: Eyes clear, ears clean, no nasal discharge noted Oral Exam: Minimal dental tartar/wear, pink/pigmented mm PLN: No enlargements noted H/L: NSR, NMA, CRT < 2, Lungs clear, eupnic ABD: Non painful, no masses palpated U/G: Spayed MSI: Ambulatory x 4, skin free of parasites, no masses noted, healthy hair coat CNS: mentation appropriate – no signs of neurologic abnormalities Assessment: Slightly overweight – appears in good overall health Plan: Continue to monitor while at BACC Prognosis: Excellent

During intake, she initially allowed to scan her and pet her. When her family left, counselor approached and she started to hiss and swat. No handling was done.

Behavior Notes: Cashmere scratches on leather couches according to the owners. She was given a scratching post but never used it.

For a New Family to Know: Cashmere loves to lounge around especially on sunspots around the home and window watch. She greets her family at the door and loves to be near them. She was kept indoors only. She sleeps under the bed.She was fed only dry food and does not like chicken. Her favorite treat is canned tuna.

MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:: Hissing, swatting, lunging in carrier.
ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 11/22/17 Lying in litterbox with a tense body. She flattens her ears and begins to growl as the bear-claw reaches towards her. Turns her head to sniff it, ears shifting forward, then growls again as it passes along her head and back. Curious but unsure. Conflicted. Needs time to adjust. Sprayed feliway. 11/26/17 At front of kennel as I approach, leaning against kennel door with tail raised. She continues to lean against the kennel door even as it opens and allows petting along her head and body while tail raises and quivers. Very affectionate, she bats at my hand with continued petting and then turns her head around to head-butt the same hand. Gets excited during interaction – may be showing signs of overstimulation. Showing much improvement! Sprayed feliway.
Cage Condition:: Cage is neat
Reaction to assessor:: Cashmere is lying in front of her kennel as the assessor approaches, body relaxed and ears forward. She reaches out towards the assessor with soft paws and makes eye contact.
Reaction when softly spoken to:: Cashmere makes continues to make eye contact when softly spoken to and vocalizes softly.
Reaction to cage door opening:: Cashmere stands up as the cage door opens and begins to lean against it.
Reaction to touch:: Cashmere allows petting along her head and body while leaning in, tail raised and quivering. Bats at assessor’s hand with claws un-extended, then turns around and continues to solicit attention by leaning and rubbing against assessor’s hand and arms.
Reaction to being picked up:: Cashmere tenses her body and hisses when the assessor attempts to pick her up.
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Lively
VOCAL:: Somewhat chatty
CHARACTER TYPE: : Bold,Social,Affectionate,Playful,People oriented
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Overstimulation,Uncomfortable with pick up
Potential challenges comments:: Cashmere is social and affectionate but appears to be easily overstimulated. As a result of this observed behavior we recommend adopters who are familiar with signs of behavioral arousal and agitation in cats, so that interactions can be ended before Cashmere becomes overstimulated. We also recommend fishing pole-type toys for play as they allow for interaction and vigorous, stimulating exercise while keeping human hands at a distance. Cashmere did not appear to like being picked up during their behavior evaluation. Please keep in mind there are many reasons why a cat may be uncomfortable with this type of handling and that this may not necessarily translate into a home environment. We recommend any future home with children be counseled in respecting the cat’s space and for the family to use care when picking her up, especially while she is still adjusting to her new home.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Cashmere allows attention and petting and solicits attention but is excitable and energetic and begins to show possible signs of overstimulation with prolonged interaction. For this reason we recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents.
