Is this cat having litter box issues?: No
Basic Information:: Zoey was brought in as a stray so history is unknown at this time. She appears to be a young, calico DMH female.
KNOWN HISTORY:: Zoey was brought in as a stray, so we cannot speak to her behavior in her previous home.
MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:: Initially allowed to be pet, reluctant to come out of carrier, started hissing and swatting.
ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 11/29/17 Lying in back of kennel with a low, tense body. She tolerates petting along her head and body while turning her head to watch the bear-claw and licking her lips. Hisses and flattens ears with continued petting. Needs more time to adjust. 11/30/17 Lying in front of kennel with a relaxed body, ears forward. Rolls around kennel floor when spoken to, then tenses body and flattens ears. Strikes through cage. Conflicted behavior. She allows petting along her head and body with the bear-claw for a few moments while leaning in, then tenses again and turns head back to hiss and bite the bear-claw. Showing signs of petting-induced aggression.
Cage Condition:: Cage is neat
Reaction to assessor:: Zoey was relaxed and comes forward to greet the assessor.
Reaction when softly spoken to:: Zoey’s tail sways and she rubs her cheeks up against the cage door.
Reaction to cage door opening:: Zoey is calm and relaxed.
Reaction to touch:: Zoey’s tail pilo-erects, she leans forward to sniff the assessor and accepts gentle petting on her head and body. After a few soft passes she starts to tense up, focuses on the assessor’s hand and swats. Her tail thrashes around, ohe retreats to the back of the kennel and low growls until the assessor leaves.
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Lively
VOCAL:: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: : Bold,Social
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Pet-induced aggression
Potential challenges comments:: Initially Zoey solicits petting and attention, but after a few soft passes over the body she begins to hiss and displays distance increasing behaviors at the assessor. This may be a sign of petting-induced aggression, where repeated physical contact results in discomfort for the cat, or it may be a sign of overstimulation. As a result of this observed behavior we recommend adopters who are familiar with signs of behavioral arousal and agitation in cats, so that interactions can be ended before Zoey becomes reactive. Treats should be used to reward appropriate responses to physical attention.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Experienced, adult only
Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable
RECOMMENDATIONS:: None
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Zoey solicits attention and tolerates petting but may be assertively demanding of attention or may play roughly. Due to Zoey showing discomfort with repeated physical contact, we feel that this cat will do best in an adult only home.
