04/16/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Yeti was brought in as a stray, so we cannot speak to his behavior in his previous home. His finder found him outside their home and they were able to pick him up and bring him to the care center. He allowed all handling during intake. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Observed Behavior – Allowed me to pet his head briefly, with just small vocalizations. Then began hissing and spitting. Required Freeman net to perform (limited) exam and do vax. EVALUATION: Cage Condition: Cage is neat Reaction to assessor: Yeti was curled up inside of a den with the opening facing the front of the kennel. Reaction when softly spoken to: Yeti looks at the assessor and blinks softly, calm and relaxed. Reaction to cage door opening: Yeti meows softly and begins to grumble while remaining motionless. Reaction to touch: Yeti lifts his head to look at the assessor’s hand when extended, shifting away slightly. He allows gentle petting on his head with a slow approach, but begins to meow and growl. His ears tilt to the side, but he tolerates gentle strokes. ACTIVITY LEVEL: None VOCAL: Somewhat chatty CHARACTER TYPE: Timid, Independent POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: – Fearful – Yeti has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus. RECOMMENDATIONS: – Experienced, adult only parents – Yeti tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
