MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:
02/03/18
Active, walked out of carrier easily, initially allowed handling but tried to flee from exam table, started hissing, growling, fled from table.
ENRICHMENT NOTES:
02/04/18
Crouched in front of food, gobbling down. Grumbles when spoken to. Backs away when I open the cage door and hisses when touched with the bear-claw, ears flattening and tail wrapping around body. Retreats through portal. Nervous after first day, needs more time to adjust.
02/05/18
Approaches the front and meows, soliciting attention. Starts to purr when coaxed and reaches out gently with her paw. She accepts gentle petting and lightly head-butts, but hisses and starts to growl after noticing a neighbor cat. Took some time to settle down, but eventually meowed softly and leaned in for more attention.
02/05/18
Crouched in back of kennel, ears forward and tail wrapped around feet. Eyes are alert. Vocalizes and grumbles as the cage door opens. She eats the treats offered so I click and reward each time she approaches me with a soft body, then each time she allows petting along her head, and then each time she allows petting along her head and body. Food motivated – responds well to clicker training. Showing possible signs of petting induced aggression. Hisses once when pet along the lower back, shows conflicted behavior. Grumbles and solicits attention. Needs some time to adjust.
02/06/18
Standing in front of kennel, body neutral and ears forward. Makes eye contact and vocalizes, then hisses. Head-butts kennel door. I open the kennel door but she is too focused on any noise or change in environment for clicker training, so I clicker train him through the cage door. I click and reward each time she approaches me with a soft body or head-butts my hand. I also click each time she taps my hand with her paw – gives high fives! Food motivated. Conflicted, needs some time to adjust. Has potential to warm up.
02/07/18
Standing in front of kennel, ears forward and eyes alert. Very focused on surroundings – vocalizations become long and drawn out whenever someone passes by her cage. Reaches out towards me with soft paws. I clicker train her, clicking and rewarding each time she approaches me with a soft body, taps my hand or allows touch. Becomes hyper-fixated on the cat beneath her half way through training session. Doesn’t appear to like other cats. Will visit again later.
02/08/18
At front of kennel as I approach, kneading and rubbing face against kennel door. Vocalizes softly. She remains calm as the cage door opens and allows petting along her head and body while leaning in and raising her tail. Purrs and kneads – remains calm and allows all petting for the remainder of the session. Doing well after room change. Even allows butt scratches! Showing much improvement – did great today.
02/09/18
She comes forward and rubs up against the kennel door as I approach. Meows softly and allows gentle petting on her head. She gives head butts and arches her body when pet along her back. Calm, relaxed body. Her tail sways and she becomes focused on her surroundings whenever she hears/sees something. Doing a lot better!
02/10/18
Rolling around and purring near the front of the kennel. Kneads on blanket, and rubs against cage door. Sniffs hand and accepts petting and attention. Tail quivers and she constantly rubs against my hand for attention. Very food motivated. Doing great!
Cage Condition:
Cage is neat
Reaction to assessor:
Wally was sitting up at the front of the kennel, watching the assessor with wide eyes and her tail wrapped around her legs.
Reaction when softly spoken to:
Wally starts to grumble and slowly moves towards the back of the kennel.
Reaction to cage door opening:
Wally hisses and jumps on top her kuranda bed.
Reaction to touch:
Wally continues to grumble and seems conflicted when the assessor extends his hand out. She vocalizes and whines, but closes her eyes and leans against the assessor’s hand, allowing gentle petting along her body. Her tail sways from side to side and she tolerates very brief petting petting before whipping around and hissing.
ACTIVITY LEVEL:
Mellow
VOCAL:
Talkative
CHARACTER TYPE:
Bold
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:
Pet-induced aggression
Potential challenges comments:
Initially Wally solicits petting and attention, but after a few soft passes over the body she begins to hiss and growl at the assessor. This may be a sign of petting-induced aggression, where repeated physical contact results in discomfort for the cat, or it may be a sign of overstimulation. As a result of this observed behavior we recommend adopters who are familiar with signs of behavioral arousal and agitation in cats, so that interactions can be ended before Wally becomes reactive. Treats should be used to reward appropriate responses to physical attention.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:
Experience
Behavior Asilomar
TM – Treatable-Manageable
RECOMMENDATIONS:
No other cats OR multi-cat home with adopters experienced with introducing new cats
Recommendations comments:
Wally remains social and easy to handle with her human caretakers, but please be aware that Wally may be uncomfortable around other cats. She has been noted to hiss and become hyper fixated whenever she notices a neighboring cat. Due to the described behaviors, we recommend Wally goes to a home with no other cats OR into a multi-cat home with cat parents experienced with introducing new cats slowly and gradually over a long period of time.
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:
Wally may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to her new home. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents.
