VALERIE – A1116038
Safe - 7-22-2017 Manhattan
SAFE 7/22/17 A volunteer writes: “Why am I here?” Valerie’s wide warm eyes seem to say to me when I met this pretty girl the other day in the cat adoption room. As I gave her my palm to sniff and rub, she let out a soft meow and seemed to add, “and when will I find my forever home?” I told her that I was wondering the same thing. Valerie comes across as confident, friendly, and outgoing, but she does have a shy side, and when she was finished sussing me out and interacting, she retreated to her cat loft and hung back, watching me write. Care Center staff seemed to notice this as well; when she came here she showed off her friendliness and allowed all handling, but also appeared to be a bit stressed and tense. This calico beauty just needs some time to feel secure and safe, and I just know she’ll bloom like a summer rose in the hands of experienced cat parents. Outgoing, gentle, and definitely a people person, Valerie is ready to warm your lap and your sofa for life.
**Valerie lost her home when her owner died. She is 7 yrs old and spayed. Needs a new home asap!

ENRICHMENT NOTES:
6/25/17
Big improvement! Asleep in top cubby, woke when door opened, eyes became dilated. Ate offered treats, then leaned and arched into pets, purred and drooled. Eyes remained wide, posture tense, seemed wary. Came briefly out to shelf after door closed. Sniffed hand between bars, briefly cheek-rubbed cage furnishings, went back into cubby.
6/26/17
In main compartment today, crouched at the front. Meowed when spoken to. Sniffed hand, and rubbed against the bars, then lay down and started to roll over. Stayed at the front when door opened. Leaned and arched into pets, ate offered treats.
6/27/17
Resting on shelf towards the front, soft eyes and body. Meowed when spoken to, came down to the front when door opened. Leaned and arched into pets, purred. Ate offered treats.
06/28/17
Resting in cubby and stretches when approached, approaching the front and meowed. Tried to clicker train, but showed no interest in tuna puree. She sniffed it, but didn’t consume it. She accepts petting and starts to purr, leaning into hand and drooling! She is very affectionate and leans against the wall. She nipped my hand once and retreated when I pet her a little rougher on the head. She blinking repeatedly after, but came forward to lean in for cheek rubs after I coaxed her and told her I was sorry. Really sweet girl!
EVALUATION:
Cage Condition: No change
Reaction to assessor: Valerie remained neutral, lying down in her cubby during the approach.
Reaction to cage door opening: Valerie became alert with soft eyes, engages with tail up, meowing attention.
Reaction to touch: Valerie leans into the assessor’s hand, purrs and appreciates the petting.
Reaction to Being Picked up: Briefly allows the pickup then jumps back into the cage.
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:
Valerie at first, was shy and hesitant with the interaction the past few days. However, after adapting here at the care center she now interacts with the observer, appreciates attention, is easy to handle and tolerates all petting. This cat is showing behavior appropriate for a new or experienced cat parents.
Enrichment:
6/22/17
In cubby behind litter box, eyes wide and fully dilated. Whined when door opened, and again when touched. Held completely immobile, started to growl when pet along back. Hissed when door closed. Sprayed feliway.
