08/01/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Twin was brought in with limited information on her behavior in her previous home. She lived in a home with one adult and other cats. She is friendly with most people and got along well with the other cats. Her owner reports she enjoys petting, uses a scratching post, and always uses her litter box. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Observed Behavior – Allowed handling but struggles during blood draw ENRICHMENT NOTES: 07/30/17 Lying in kennel with a relaxed body. She backs away as I reach forward and retreats through her portal quickly when touched on the head. Needs more time to adjust. 07/31/17 Sitting in back of kennel with ears forward and feet folded beneath her. She tenses and hisses as I’m opening the kennel door. Tolerates petting with the bear-claw while backing away and moving towards her portal to retreat, tail down. Pauses and comes back forward hesitantly for a treat. I click and reward each time she comes back forward. Not ready for petting yet. EVALUATION: Cage Condition: Cage is slightly re-arranged Reaction to assessor: Twin approaches the front and sniffs around, curious. Reaction when softly spoken to: Twin looks at the assessor and sits up right, blinking softly. Reaction to cage door opening: Twin becomes stiff and alert. Reaction to touch: Twin focuses on the assessor’s hand and shifts away. She sniffs it when extended slowly, but ducks her head and backs away when petting is attempted. She tolerates gentle petting, but flinches and appears uncomfortable. She hisses with continued petting, but does not display other distance-increasing behaviors. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Moderate VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Shy, Calm POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: Twin has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed discomfort with extended handling. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide her with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. RECOMMENDATIONS: – Experienced, adult home only – Twin tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. She may need time to warm up to her new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
