06/17/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Previously lived with: 1 Adult Behavior toward strangers: Shy Behavior toward children: Unknown Behavior toward cats: Lived with other cats and got along well with them Behavior toward dogs: Unknown Bite or Scratch history: None Litter box training: Yes Energy level/descriptors: Shy, hides a lot MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Hisses and swats at tech when approached in cage. Netted and set on exam table, still showing defensive aggression (hissing and swatting) ENRICHMENT NOTES: 06/15/17 Lying in back of kennel tense with a low body. She sniffs my hand and swats at it as I reach towards her head. Needs more time to adjust. EVALUATION: Cage Condition: Cage recently cleaned Reaction to assessor: Tino was curled up and lying flat in his litter box. Reaction when softly spoken to: Tino’s ears bend flat and he low growls when spoken to softly. Reaction to cage door opening: Tino becomes alert. Reaction to touch: Tino arches his body and the hairs along his back and tail pilo-erect. He hisses, swats and displays distance increasing behaviors. He seems very stressed and currently doesn’t allow any contact. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Laid back VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Skittish POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: Fearful – Tino has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus. RECOMMENDATION: Placement with a New Hope partner Tino is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and may require further investigation before placement in a home. He has tried to swat, is extremely fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
