Tiger is at-risk with an experienced determination. His previous owner reports he keeps his distance around strangers, but will enjoy petting after he adjusts. He displays fearful behavior and will hunch up his body when approached for interaction. He allows gentle petting, but flinches and appears very uncomfortable, looking away during the interaction.

09/01/17 12:59 Basic information: Tiger is a 5 year old DSH cat. He has no known health issues or injuries, and has not been to the vet recently. Socialization: Tiger will keep his distance for a bit of time before approaching strangers in the house. Once he has adjusted he enjoys attention and being pet. He has lived with many children and is very relaxed and playful with them. He will sit with them for extended period and enjoys being pet by them. He has previously lived with another cat but had conflicts with her. He would most likely be best fit in a home where he is the only cat. He has not lived with dogs. Behavior: Tiger’s owner described him as being very affectionate and friendly, as well as playful and talkative. He is not bothered by being bathed or having his nails trimmed, and enjoys being brushed. He allows his owner to pick him up and carry him, and is unbothered by being put in the carrier. He is described as having a high activity level, and will follow the family around the house. For a New Family to know: Tiger eats both wet and dry food, and is litter box trained using a hooded box and any kind of litter. He uses a cardboard scratching post, and likes to play with string toys. Behavior during intake: Tiger kept a low body and was quiet but allowed counselor to do all handling.

He allows his owner to pick him up and carry him MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Very nervous, tense throughout exam, will flee to adjacent cage, no signs of aggression just remained tense and tried to back away EVALUATION: Cage Condition: Cage is neat Reaction to assessor: Tiger was tense and curled up inside his litter box. Reaction when softly spoken to: Tiger flinches and sinks lower into the litter box. Reaction to cage door opening: Tiger lip licks then turns and faces the wall. Reaction to touch: Tiger lip licks and flinches when the assessor pets him lightly on his head. He seems uncomfortable when touched, then shifts his weight and lowers his head, trying to avoid eye contact. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Laid back VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Timid POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: Fearful – Tiger has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and may dislike certain types of handling. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experienced cat parent – Tiger may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents.
