09/02/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Lived Indoors Previously lived with: Adults and children Behavior toward strangers: Friendly and outgoing Behavior toward children: Relaxed and playful Behavior toward cats: Relaxed and affectionate Behavior toward dogs: Unknown Bite or Scratch history: She swats and scratches if she doesn’t want to be held or bothered. Litter box training: She’s been having daily litter box accidents since the other cat in the home passed away. Energy level/descriptors: Friendly and affectionate at times with a medium activity level. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Yowling, hissing. Limited exam in net ENRICHMENT NOTES: 08/31/17 Sitting crouched in front of kennel, yowling and hissing. Striking through cage door each time I walk past. Very uncomfortable at this time. Gave her a cage cover and sprayed feliway. Needs more time to adjust. EVALUATION: Cage Condition: Cage is neat Reaction to assessor: Tiffany keeps her body lowered in a defensive posture at the back of the cage. Reaction when softly spoken to: Tiffany yowls then comes forward and tries to swat through the bars. Reaction to cage door opening: Tiffany is tense and alert. Reaction to touch: Tiffany’s ears bend flat, she hisses and displays distance increasing behaviors when approached. She seems very uncomfortable in the shelter environment and currently doesn’t allow any handling. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Laid back VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Skittish POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: Inappropriate elimination – Tiffany’s previous owners report that he/she was eliminating (urinating) outside the litter box daily. We are unaware of what, if any, modifications steps were taken to try and address this behavior in the home, so we cannot be sure what the trigger may have been or if this behavior may continue in a future home. However, we recommend that potential adopters be comfortable with management and modification techniques for elimination outside the litter box should this behavior continue in a home environment.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Placement with a New Hope partner – Tiffany is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and may require further investigation before placement in a home. She has tried to swat, is extremely fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. She may have a known history of behavioral issues that need to be addressed. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
