Brooklyn Center
Hello, my name is Chocolate. My animal id is #12566. I am a desexed male black kitten at the Brooklyn Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 months old. – P
I came into the shelter as a stray on 14-Nov-2017.
Chocolate is at risk for behavior concerns (Adult Only determination). He has been fearful in care center and displays distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Although Chocolate may initially flee during the interaction, he has shown some improvement and will warm up with slow and gentle attention. There are no known medical conditions for Chocolate at this time.

KNOWN HISTORY:: Chocolate was brought in as a stray, so we cannot speak to his behavior in his previous home.
MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:: Immediately tries to flee, biting and scratching (no blood drawn)
ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 11/15/17 Lying in back of kennel with a low body. Makes eye contact and flattens ears. Tolerates petting while turning head to watch the bear-claw with wide eyes and backing away, tail wrapped around body. Hisses, then darts forward in an attempt to flee. Needs more time to adjust. Sprayed feliway. 11/16/17 Lying in litterbox with a low, tense body. Ears are flattened. He backs away when I open the kennel door and tolerates petting along his head and body while hissing and whipping head back to watch the bear-claw. Hisses continuously until interaction has ended. Not interested in treats at the moment. Needs more time to adjust. Sprayed feliway.
Cage Condition:: Cage is slightly re-arranged
Reaction to assessor:: Chocolate was tense, alert and crouched near the front of the kennel.
Reaction when softly spoken to:: Chocolate hisses, his ears bend flat then he retreats into the litter box.n
Reaction to cage door opening:: Chocolate hisses then retreats to the other side of the double kennel.
Reaction to touch:: Chocolate’s eyes dart around when approached, he hisses and tries to avoid being touched. He starts breathing more rapidly, flinches when touched and briefly tolerates petting before trying to flee.
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Laid back
VOCAL:: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: : Skittish,Independent
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,Kitten socialization
Potential challenges comments:: Chocolate has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and may dislike certain types of handling. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus. Chocolate is a young cat that may not have had many interactions with humans from an early age. He may be apprehensive of people, but the behavior team believes he has potential to warm up to people. Kittens less than 8 weeks of age can be socialized by almost anyone; however, kittens between 2-4 months may require more time and skill in order for them to be comfortable around people. Please speak to an adoption counselor to learn more about socialization techniques.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Experienced, adult only
Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable
RECOMMENDATIONS:: None
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Chocolate tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. He may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
