Hello, my name is Teddy. My animal id is #18900. I am a desexed male gray tabby cat at the Brooklyn Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 10 years old. – P

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 21-Jan-2018, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- no time for animal.

Teddy was placed at risk due to his medical condition; he was diagnosed with diabetes and will benefit from placement outside the shelter as soon as possible. he can go to an Average home.

Urine dipstick blood – neg urobilinogen – neg bilirubin – neg protein – + nitrite – neg ketones – neg asorbic acid – neg glucose – 1000 pH – 8 specific gravity – 1.005 leukocytes – neg USG w/refractometer – 1.044

Estimated age: 10 yrs. Microchip noted on Intake? No History : Patient surrendered. Owner reports that patient was diagnosed with diabetes 2 years ago and has not been on insulin for several months. Subjective: BAR, tolerable of handling. Fresh food in carrier appeared to have been eaten. Observed Behavior – Curious yet docile. Mild amount of restraint needed for exam. Evidence of Cruelty seen – no Evidence of Trauma seen – no Objective P = 200 bpm R = eupneic BCS = 7/9 EENT: Nuclear sclerosis, scant amount of ceruminous debris, no nasal or ocular discharge noted Oral Exam: Grade II-III/IV periodontal disease PLN: No enlargements noted H/L: NSR, NMA, CRT < 2, Lungs clear, eupnic ABD: Non painful, no masses palpated U/G: MN, Kidneys S+S, full bladder MSI: Ambulatory x 4, skin free of parasites, no masses noted, Dull hair coat CNS: Mentation appropriate – no signs of neurologic abnormalities Assessment: Geriatric MN DSH with 1. History of diabetes 2. periodontal disease 3. Dull hair coat Prognosis: Fair with appropriate management Plan: 1. Run bloodwork CBC/Chemistry/BG/UA – Initial BG= 612 mg/dL 2. Start insulin at 1 unit Prozinc BID 3. Continue to monitor BG, appetite, urine daily. 4. Recommend seek placement asap.

CBC/Chemistry Severe hyperglycemia (623 mg/dL) Ref: 71- 159 mg/dL Mild hyperglobulinemia (6.0 g/dL) Ref: 2.8-5.1 g/dL Mild hyperproteinemia (9.1 g/dL) Ref: 5.7-8.9 g/dL mild hypercholesterolemia (241 mg/dL) ref: 65-225 mg/dL Urinalysis Interpretation (dipstick): Glucose = 1000 mg/dL Protein = 1+ USG = 1.005 (Refractometer USG = 1.044) Findings of Hyperglycemia, glucosuria and proteinuria support diagnosis of unregulated Diabetes Mellitus. Hyperglobulinemia and Hypercholesterolemia are likely secondary to Diabetes.

Progress exam History : O/s 1/22 with history of unmanaged DM. – Initial BG= 612 mg/dL CBC/Chem: Severe hyperglycemia (623 mg/dL) Ref: 71- 159 mg/dL Mild hyperglobulinemia (6.0 g/dL) Ref: 2.8-5.1 g/dL Mild hyperproteinemia (9.1 g/dL) Ref: 5.7-8.9 g/dL mild hypercholesterolemia (241 mg/dL) ref: 65-225 mg/dL UA: Glucose = 1000 mg/dL Protein = 1+ USG = 1.005 (Refractometer USG = 1.044) Subjective: BAR, ~5% dehydrated. PU/PD. Eating well. Very friendly and social. Upon intake Teddy was timid but he allowed the counselor to collar him and take a photo.

Is this cat having litter box issues?: No

Basic Information:: Teddy is a 10 year old altered male Gray tabby and white DSH. He was bred in the home and was surrendered due to the family having no time.

Previously lived with:: 2 adults, 3 cats

How is this cat around strangers?: Around strangers Teddy is timid at first but becomes friendly and affectionate

How is this cat around children?: Teddy has lived with teenagers before and is calm and gentle with them.

How is this cat around other cats?: Teddy has also lived with three of his litter mates. He is affectionate and playful with them.

How is this cat around dogs?: Teddy has never been around dogs.

Behavior Notes: Teddy will struggle during a nail trim, but likes being held or pet. He isn’t bothered with being placed in the carrier.

Bite history:: Teddy has no bite history.

Energy level/descriptors:: medium activity level

Has this cat ever had any medical issues?: Yes

Medical Notes: Teddy was diagnosed with diabetes 2 years ago.

For a New Family to Know: Teddy was described as friendly, Independent and affectionate. He likes to follow the family around the home and loves catnip toys. Teddy is kept indoors and is litter boxed trained with 2 uncovered boxed and 2 Hooded boxes with clumping litter. He is fed dry food of the Purina cat chow brand. Teddy has a vertical scratching post made of rough rope.

KNOWN HISTORY:: KNOWN HISTORY: Lived Indoors Previously lived with: 2 adults, 3 cats Behavior toward strangers: Timid at first but becomes friendly and affectionate Behavior toward children: Lived with teenagers and was calm and gentle Behavior toward cats: Lived with 3 other cats and was affectionate and playful Behavior toward dogs: Unknown Bite or Scratch history: None Litter box training: Yes Energy level/descriptors: Independent, friendly and affectionate with a medium activity level Other notes: He struggle during a nail trim, but likes being held or pet. He isn’t bothered with being placed in the carrier.

MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:: 01/21/18 Curious yet docile. Mild amount of restraint needed for exam.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 01/22/18 Comes forward and head-butts kennel door. Allows petting along head and body while leaning in and raising tail. Friendly boy – doing well!

Cage Condition:: Cage is recently cleaned

Reaction to assessor:: Teddy was crouched in the back of the kennel.

Reaction when softly spoken to:: Teddy perks up and leans forward when the assessor calls his name.

Reaction to cage door opening:: Teddy lip licks then moves to the back of the kennel.

Reaction to touch:: Teddy seems hesitant initially, but he sniffs the assessor’s hand, then leans in and accepts petting on his head and body. He arches his body, tail rises and he gives head butts.

Reaction to being picked up:: Teddy was tense when picked up and quickly leaped back into the kennel.

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Mellow

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Calm,Affectionate

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: None

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Average

Behavior Asilomar: H – Healthy

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Teddy interacts with the observer, appreciates attention, is easy to handle and tolerates all petting. This cat is showing behavior appropriate for new or experienced cat parents.
