Reaction when softly spoken to: Star’s ears tilt, but he looks at the assessor and his eyes soften a bit. Reaction to cage door opening: Star becomes stiff and alert. Reaction to touch: Star inches forward to sniff the assessor’s hand, but was hesitant and lowers his body when pet. He allows gentle petting, but is watchful of the assessor’s hand when stroked along his body. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Moderate VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Timid, Curious, Independent POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: – Inappropriate elimination – Star’s previous owner reports he had been urinating outside his litter box for the past week. We are unaware of what, if any, modifications steps were taken to try and address this behavior in the home, so we cannot be sure what the trigger may have been or if this behavior may continue in a future home. However, we recommend that potential adopters be comfortable with management and modification techniques for elimination outside the litter box should this behavior continue in a home environment. – Fearful – His previous owner reports he is fearful of strangers. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. RECOMMENDATIONS: – Experienced cat parent – Star tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter. He may need time to warm up to his new home and family. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents.
