ST. JOHNS is such an awesome cat. He’s been here since 11/11/16. Please consider making him part of your family today! A volunteer writes: St Johns rolls around in his cage adorably, making cute faces at everyone who passes by. You kind of get the sense he knows how adorable he is, too, because it seems to have the desired response – people come over and pet him, which he loves. He continues rolling around, purring and just acting like the sweet, friendly guy he is.

Behavior::
St. Johns was brought in as a stray, so we cannot speak to his behavior in his previous home. His finder reports he was roaming around in their yard and says he was friendly and will meow of attention. He allowed all handling upon intake and during his initial medical exam, but the medical team reports he was tense and would stress meow.
The enrichment facilitator reports he had a relaxed body posture during their first interaction, and seemed to appreciate head rubs. He did hiss a few times when noticing neighbor cats, but remained calm when interacting with staff. He was more active the next day and would approach the front. He pushes his head forward for more rubs and appeared to be doing better.
Reaction to assessor: St. Johns was resting by the front, calm and relaxed.
Reaction when softly spoken to: St. Johns lifts his head slightly and looks around, appearing unsure.
Reaction to cage door opening: St. Johns remains motionless.
Reaction to touch: St. Johns sniffs the assessor’s hand and accepts petting. He warms up more with cheek rubs, leaning in and purring.
Reaction to pick up: St. Johns lies flat against his bedding and becomes tense with attempt. When trying to lift him up, he hisses and his ears tilt sideways. No pick up was done to avoid stressing him.
Behavior Determination: Experienced
St. Johns tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter. He may need time to warm up to his new home. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents. Due to his reaction when pick up was attempted, we recommend any future home with children conduct a thorough interaction before adopting.

Has screen on cage, quiet. Relaxed body posture and soft eyes when I pull back. Large boy, lying with face right at front. Hisses once or twice when I’m checking on other cats but is calm with me. Gave head rubs, which he appreciated. Didn’t get up. Hair loss on right ear, which was noted in initial exam.

Removed screen, doesn’t seem to need it. Eyes wide but seems relaxed if a bit uncomfortable in the small cage. Big, sturdy cat. Up and more active today, appreciates attention. Lifts up and comes further forward when I open cage, stays calm. Social, friendly, pushes head in for more rubs. Seems to be doing better.

While I was on the other side of the room I heard him hissing some, probably at the outrageously outgoing cat in the cage next to him. He didn’t stick his paws out, just hissed a little. When I got to his cage he was sprawled out and relaxed. He rolled around, lying on his back, soft eyes and body. Stayed calm and friendly when I opened the door, letting me pet all over, which he enjoyed. Let me rub his belly. Huge cat, really a big sturdy boy. Let me pick up and hold, stayed friendly and attention-seeking when I returned him to the cage. Doing really well.
