Reaction when softly spoken to:: Smokey lifts his head and makes eye contact when softly spoken to.
Reaction to cage door opening:: Smokey watches the door as it opens and licks his lips.
Reaction to touch:: Smokey tolerates petting along his head and body briefly before turning to pull the assessor’s hand towards him with claws extended and biting down on the hand.
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Moderate
VOCAL:: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: : Independent
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Other
Potential challenges comments:: O/S notes vs. Shelter Observation While Smokey is social and affectionate in a home environment, we are seeing behavior in the shelter that is not noted on their profile. He has been exhibits distance increasing behavior and will bite or swat while interacting with the assessor and does not currently allow petting or handling. We cannot be sure that this cat will respond the same way in a home environment, but we believe the behavior seen is exhibited due to being in a high stressful environment. We are basing the determination primarily on the owner profile, but we advise that adopters are aware of the behavior and that he may need to warm up to his new home and family at his own pace.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Experience
Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable
RECOMMENDATIONS:: None
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Smokey tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter. Although he does not allow handling while here in our care center his owner profile describes him as being friendly in the home and around the children he’s been exposed to. Because of his owner profile we recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents.
