SKYLARK – A1108346
Safe - 4-20-2017 Brooklyn
SAFE 4/20/17 Skylark is a lovely 1 year old kitty who’s still not too sure how she feels about the shelter environment – she often sends mixed signals to our enrichment team, but we know in a more relaxing, experienced kitty home she would be one happy lady! Skylark has been showing signs of deteriorating behavior recently (ears flatten when someone walks by, growling from back of kennel, etc.) and because of this we’d like to get her placed as soon as possible.

Behavior::
KNOWN HISTORY:
Skylark was brought in as a stray, so we cannot speak to her behavior in her previous home. She was very shy during intake, but she allowed the counselor to collar her.
MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:
Observed Behavior – eyes wide, at front of carrier, meowing; cat strongly resisted being removed from carrier and started hissing, growling, and swatting at sides of carrier. Took top off and used blanket to hold.
ENRICHMENT NOTES:
04/10/17
Ears tilt when approached, low body flattened against corner of kennel. Low whine when spoken to and continues to whine and lip lick when stroked along head. Limited interaction – needs more time.
04/11/17
Lying horizontally in back of the kennel. Slow blinks when spoken to. Eyes widen and she backs up when approached. She sniffs the treats in my hand but will not eat them. Low whines and licks lips when pet. Not ready to interact.
EVALUATION:
Cage Condition: Cage is neat
Reaction to assessor: Skylark was lying down by the back, looking out with soft eyes.
Reaction when softly spoken to: Skylark blinks and lip licks. She pokes her head forward and appeared interested, but also unsure.
Reaction to cage door opening: Skylark becomes alert, but remains in place.
Reaction to touch: Skylark comes forward to sniff, but was hesitant. She allows petting with a slow approach and begins to warm up, arching her back and leaning in for cheek rubs. She grumbles from time to time and appears wary of her surroundings, but also seems to appreciate petting and attention. With more attention, the grumbling begins to subside.
ACTIVITY LEVEL: Moderate
VOCAL: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: Shy, Timid, Sweet
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:
– Fearful – Skylark has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide her with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus.
RECOMMENDATIONS:
– Experienced cat parent – Skylark tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter. She may need time to warm up to her new home. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents.
Enrichment::
04/10/17:
Ears tilt when approached, low body flattened against corner of kennel. Low whine when spoken to and continues to whine and lip lick when stroked along head. Limited interaction – needs more time. Sprayed feliway.

Laying horizontally in back of the kennel. Slow blinks when spoken to. Eyes widen and she backs up when approached. She sniffs the treats in my hand but will not eat them. Low whines and licks lips when pet. Not ready to interact. Sprayed feliway.
04/16/17:
Sitting on her haunches in center of kennel with wide eyes. She makes eye contact with me when I speak to her and begins to growl, drawing it out into a low whine. She sniffs the air when I open the treat bag and comes forward. I open the kennel and she takes the treats from my hand, continuing to growl. She lets me pet her head, leaning into it and raising her tail while I keep offering her treats. I stop petting her when her tail begins to lash back and forth. Does enjoy touch and she loves treats. Gives mixed signals. Sprayed Feliway.
04/17/17:
Sitting in front of kennel with a low body and wide eyes. She sniffs the air as I approach with tuna and reaches out towards me with claws not extended. She eats the tuna from my gloved hand and licks it clean while grumbling and growling softly. She allows soft strokes on her head, raising her tail in the air and leaning in. She’s back in the corner of the kennel at the end of the interaction, growling. Her body tenses and her ears flatten whenever someone opens the door and enters the room. Added shoreline to right side of kennel.
