*** SAFE 04/23/17 *** A volunteer writes: “The cat adoption room, again?” Simba seemed to say to me as I came by this sweet boy’s kennel to give him a chin rub. “I thought I’d found my forever home–what am I doing back here?” I told him not to worry; with his super friendly personality and nice manners, he’s bound to find pet parents who will cherish him for eternity. Simba is a young guy at just a year old, and his former family gave him high marks for his playfulness (chasing balls is his specialty!), affectionate nature, and how good he was to the two children and other cat in the household. Make this gray tabby smile again by bringing him into your household today!

04/07/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Indoor and/or Outdoor? Previously lived with: Adults & children (ages 12 and 8yrs old) Behavior toward strangers: Friendly and outgoing Behavior toward children: Relaxed and affectionate with them. Plays exuberantly Behavior toward cats: Lived with another cat and was affectionate and playful. He played somewhat rough with the other cat and liked to pounce on each other. Behavior toward dogs: Unknown Bite or Scratch history: None Litter box training: He has gone to the bathroom outside the litter box a couple of times in the last 2 weeks but has always been litter box trained before. Energy level/descriptors: Affectionate playful active and loveable with a very high activity level. Other notes: He’s quiet & calm in the car and he doesn’t like getting baths. Simba enjoys being brushed and picked up/held. He doesn’t mind being placed in a carrier. His owner states that he can open doors and he enjoys playing with balls, string and light. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Social at first, but quickly becomes agitated and hisses/swats. EVALUATION: Cage Condition: Cage slightly re-arranged Reaction to assessor: Simba was relaxed, sitting at the back of the kennel with her paws folded under her body. He glances over with soft eyes then leans forward to investigate. Reaction when softly spoken to: Simba tilts his head then rolls over on his side and rubs up against the kennel furnishings. Reaction to cage door opening: Simba pauses then focuses on the assessor. Reaction to touch: Simba sniffs the assessor’s hand then gently leans in allowing petting and rubs on his head. He keeps his tail curled up against his body but continues soliciting attention and leans in when rubbed on his cheeks. When I started petting him with long strokes along his back he quickly whipped around, nipped, then guiding my hand back to his head with force. It seems like he prefers attention mostly on his head but still allows full body pets as long as you do it slowly. Reaction to being picked up: Simba was tense when picked up, started lip licking then hissed & leaped back into the kennel. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Moderate VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Affectionate
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: Inappropriate elimination – Simba previous owners report that he was eliminating (defecating) outside the litter box a couple times over the past 2 weeks but has always been litter box trained before. The previous owners report that they tried cleaning the litter more often but the inappropriate elimination behavior has continued. Simba’s owner also stated that she has changed the brand of the litter around the same time this behavior started. We advise potential adopters to be aware that this behavior may continue in a home environment, and that they be comfortable with management and modification techniques for this behavioral challenge. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experienced cat parent – Simba may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. He may have some behavioral issues that will need to be addressed in the home. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents.
