02/17/2017 PET PROFILE MEMO
02/17/17 18:29 Basic information: Simba is a 6 yr. old male domestic short hair mix. The owner surrendered Simba because she is moving. Simba has no health problems and the owner has not taken him to a vet. Socialization: The owner states that around strangers Simba is very fearful and growls, hisses and swats at strangers. Simba has lived with children between the ages of 1 and 5 years old however the children do not like to interact with Simba and Simba tries to stay away from them (Simba has also been known to get jealous if the Owner gives the children more attention them him and may growl and hiss at the owner). Simba has never been around other pets so the owner has no idea. Simba has had a history of scratching and biting the owner and hissing at other family members (last know bite was over a year ago). Behavior: Simba has never been bathed, had his nails trimmed. He does not mind having his coat brushed (by the owner only) but hates being picked up and being placed in a cat carrier (he will struggle and swat the person). For a new family to know: The owner describes Simba shy and fearful cat with a medium activity level. Simba has played with rubber ball and string cat toys; he lives mostly indoors and sleeps anywhere in the house that he wants. In the home Simba will follow the owner around and prefers to stay in same room as the owner. Simba eats meow mix brand dry cat food and is open feed. He is litter box trained and uses an uncovered litter box with clumping litter. Simba has never been given a scratching post so the owner does not know if he will use it or not. Behavior during intake: During intake Simba was very tense with stiff body, Simba growled hissed and attempted to bite the hand of the handler, Simba scanned positive but due to Simba’s behavior we were unable to put on the ID collar or take a picture.

Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him/her with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus. RECOMMENDATIONS: _X_ Placement with a New Hope – Simba is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and may require further investigation before placement in a home. He has shown aggressive behavior which continues to escalate in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner.
