How is this cat around children?Around the 7 month old, Sheila does not like to be petted and held. The toddler’s interactions with Sheila were hardly supervised and Sheila would swat and hiss at the young toddler.

For a New Family to KnowSheila is described as a confident, independent, and quiet cat. When her family comes home, she rarely seeks attention. Her favorite toys are strings, wand toys, and catnip toys. She was kept indoors only. She was fed Friskies wet and dry food. She was provided with an uncovered litter box with clumping litter. She was given a horizontal scratching post.
Behavior Notes:During intake, Sheila had her eyes dilated and ears back. No handling was done.

Observed Behavior – Did well for PE but once restrained for medical procedures started growling and trying to flee.

Sheila approaches the front and rubs on the cage door, meowing for attention.
Reaction when softly spoken to:
Sheila rubs her cheeks all over the cage door, continuing to solicit attention.

Sheila greets the assessor by the opening.
Reaction to touch:
Sheila head-butts and leans in hard for rubs. She chirps and begins to purr while her tail sways from side to side. The base of her tail pilo-erects, but she does not seem to overstimulate and she continues soliciting attention throughout interaction.
Reaction to being picked up:
Sheila remains calm and gently leaps back into the kennel and continues to solicit more attention.

Sheila interacts with the observer and appreciates attention, but she was reported to display distance-increasing behaviors around the toddler in her previous home. Though we believe this cat is displaying behaviors appropriate for new or experienced cat parents, she may not be a great fit for young children. Any home with older children prepared to adopt this cat should conduct a thorough interaction and endeavor to monitor this cat around their children to prevent these behaviors from being reinforced.
