SAFE 3/8/18 SHADOW was dumped by his owner who gave a few different stories as to why the cat was brought there. He is frightened and needs a home asap.

MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:

Observed Behavior –
Intake notes: Shadow was calm while in the box owner brought her in. When transferred to the carrier Shadow allowed to be picked up with no problem. After in the carrier Shadow became tense and when opening the carrier he tried to flee.
ENRICHMENT NOTES:

Crouched and trying to hide inside the litter box. Avoids eye contact. Body tenses up and flinches when touched. He becomes very focused on his surroundings. Kept interaction short due to stress.
03/04/18
Lying in front of kennel, body relaxed. Rolls over onto side and scoots forward when spoken to, pupils dilated. Vocalizes softly. He remains in front of his kennel as the cage door opens and allows petting along his head and body while leaning in and continuing to roll around. Constantly scent marking kennel floor. Very sweet. Allows all petting and appreciates attention – Warming up! Gobbles up all treats given.
03/05/18
At front of kennel, body relaxed and pupils dilated. Rolls over onto side when spoken to. He tenses his body and leans away as I open the kennel door. Focused on environment – pauses and retreats through portal when cage in front of him begins to get cleaned. Comes back forward for treats and leans in for petting, tail remaining low. Timid and sweet, a bit skittish today. Needs some time to adjust.

Shadow was grooming, but looks at the assessor briefly before he returns to groom again.
Reaction when softly spoken to:
Shadow rolls over and rubs his head against his litter box and bedding to solicit attention.
Reaction to cage door opening:
Shadow becomes alert and looks around.
Reaction to touch:
Shadow sniffs the assessor’s hand, accepts petting, and rolls around. He leans in for cheek rubs, has soft eyes, and begins to purr. He tenses up at times with sudden movement or noise, but seems to appreciate attention.
Reaction to being picked up:
Shadow is a bit tense during pick up, but allows handling.

Basic Information:Shadow is an adult male black DSH. Owners have had Shadow on and off for 6 months and is surrendering because of allergies

Behavior Notesin car rides Shadow is quiet. Shadow isnt bothered when getting baths. Previous owners have not trimmed Shadow nails themselves. Shadow enjoys being brushed and being picked up and held. Shadow has never been placed in a carrier.

For a New Family to KnowShadow was described as friendly, affectionate, independent and quiet. when home with Shadow he likes to be in a favorite spot, Shadow likes to sit by the open window and if you try to close it he will put his paw on it. Shadow enjoys playing with balls and pieces of paper. Shadow is litter box trained and uses an uncovered litter box with clumping litter. Shadow has a scratching post made of rope and also likes to scratch on the carpet. Shadow eats dry food and usually has tthe bowl left out for him. Shadow likes his food and water bowl cleaned daily or he wont eat or drink from them. When its time for bed Shadow likes to sleep on the couch.
Behavior Notes:During intake Shadow was quiet. Shadow allowed to be picked up and placed in a carrier at first. After in the carrier for a few minutes once the door was opened Shadow tried to flee.

Post-op exam-noted to be bleeding from scrotum in cage
History: Intake 3/2-APH. Neutered 3/6-had some oozing from neuter site post-op. 3/7 am was noted to have blood in cage and significant swelling of scrotum.
Subjective: BARH. No csvd. Sedated for exam. Scrotum is very swollen with moderate oozing from site and a clot hanging out of the incision.

Oral Exam: clean adult dentition, pink mm
PLN: No enlargements noted
H/L: NSR, NMA, CRT < 2, Lungs clear, eupneic
ABD: Non painful, no masses palpated
U/G: MN-see below for scrotal hematoma
MSI: Ambulatory x 4 (pre-sedation), skin free of parasites, no masses noted, healthy haircoat, moderate bruising around inguinal area and scrotum, moderate swelling of scrotum with moderate oozing from site, clot formed on right side
CNS: Mentation appropriate – no signs of neurologic abnormalities before sedation, sedated for exam
Assessment:
Post neuter hematoma/bleeding

Plan:
Sedated with telazol 0.1ml IM and maintained with isoflurane
Applied gentle pressure and ice pack for 20 minutes
Start simbadol 0.24mg/kg SQ SID x2d until 3/8 (first dose given)
Start onsior 2mg/kg SQ SID x2d until 3/8 (first dose given)
Applied e-collar
CTM in medical. Did not open up neuter site at this time due to controlled bleeding. Knots were secure and double checked at time of surgery.

History: O/S; convoluted history. Owner stated that the previous owner took the cat back over Christmas break in December. They returned the cat 2 weeks later stating their cat was fighting with Shadow and they tried to keep them separated but they could not keep shadow anymore. Owner does not know details if the cat was scratched or bit by the other cat. Please check cat for old wounds for possible DOH hold.
Subjective: Cat is BARH
Observed Behavior –
Intake notes: Shadow was calm while in the box owner brought her in. When transferred to the carrier Shadow allowed to be picked up with no problem. After in the carrier Shadow became tense and when opening the carrier he tried to flee. Could not collar or scan due to fleeing.
Medical behavior notes: At front of cage, but then retreats to back when opened. Allowed handler to remove from cage, but barely started exam when cat fleed. Caught in net and sedated with 0.1mL Telazol IM, which did not provide adequate sedation for exam and treatments; added additional 0.05mls IM, which was adequate for exam and vaccines.
