***SAFE 10/17/17*** SHY AND SWEET SENIOR KITTY SAM HAS BEEN AT THE SHELTER A WHILE BUT TONIGHT HE GETS THE BOOT! Sam is 17 lbs and 14 yrs old. He lost his home when owner died. This big boy now has the shelter cold and must exit immediately! He is AVERAGE rated and had loved petting more than the cat treats the staff was feeding him. SAM NEEDS TO BE RESERVED BY NOON!!

URI noted on rounds S/O: QAR. Attention seeking. Appetite OK EENT: Eyes clear, moderate bilateral seromucoid nasal discharge HL: No sneezing observed A: URI P: Rec doxycycline 1ml PO q24 x 10 days. Excellent prognosis

KNOWN HISTORY: Sam was brought in as a stray, so there is no information on his behavior history or tendencies in a home environment. He kept a low body posture during intake and was lip licking, but he allowed handling to be conducted. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Observed Behavior – very nice, allows handling ENRICHMENT NOTES: 10/02/17 Lying in back of kennel, head facing kennel wall. He turns his head and makes eyes contact when spoken to. Comes forward slightly and leans into petting. Allows further petting while raising his rear into the air and making eye contact with soft eyes. Beginning to warm up! Did well today. Sprayed feliway. More focused on petting than treats. 10/01/17 Lying in back of kennel, head facing the wall. He tolerates petting along his head and body while turning to face me and licking his lips. Tail is wrapped around body. Nervous – needs more time to adjust. Cage Condition: Cage is neat Reaction to assessor: Sam was lying down by the back, curled up against the back corner and looking at the assessor with soft eyes. Reaction when softly spoken to: Sam steps forward slightly, but was hesitant and remains in place. Reaction to cage door opening: Sam remains motionless. Reaction to touch: Sam sniffs the assessor’s hand and lightly head-butts. He leans in for cheek rubs, closes his eyes, and begins to purr. Reaction to being picked up: Sam is a bit tense during pick up (possibly due to weight), but allows handling and remains calm. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Moderate VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Shy Sweet Affectionate POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: None BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: Average Behavior Asilomar H – Healthy RECOMMENDATIONS: None BEHAVIOR SUMMARY: Sam interacts with the observer, appreciates attention, is easy to handle and tolerates all petting. This cat is showing behavior appropriate for new or experienced cat parents.
