RUBY – A1064697
Safe - 2-24-2016 Manhattan Rescue: Staten Island Hope Please honor your pledges: http://www.statenislandhoperescue.org/
SAFE 2/24/16 A volunteer writes: Precious Ruby has been a little nervous at the shelter, though we wish she’d spend a bit more time meeting new people because this girl is golden. Ruby came to us as an owner surrender and so she’s understandably a little apprehensive about all her new surroundings, but please don’t misinterpret her shyness. You see, all Ruby needs is a little time and patience. Though she was sleeping under a blanket when I visited her, I took a chance and petted her for just a few moments before she rolled over, purring in my arms. Take a chance and you too can be handsomely rewarded for your patience with Ruby’s appreciation, friendship, and love.

ENRICHMENT:
2/9/16
At the back, face hidden behind blanket, anxious. Tolerated pets, but kept eyes focused on me. Sprayed feliway.
2/10/16
Huge improvement! Still at the back, but sniffed hand, leaned and arched into pets. Definitely starting to warm up. Sprayed feliway.
2/14/16
Further big improvement! Relaxed, lying in cubby. Did not seem overtly scared, just a little shy. Came forward and ate treats from hand. Allowed all pets. Sprayed feliway.
2/15/16
Still in cubby, but seemed calm and relaxed. No withdrawing or lip licking today. Lay in place, leaned into pets.
BEHAVIOR:
Ruby’s former owner stated she is shy around strangers. She hides and will come out after a few hours or days. She has not been around small children but did live in a home with a 19 year old and 21 year old with autism. Ruby played exuberantly with them and with the owner. She lived in a home with two other cats. She played exuberantly with them as well. Ruby is Nicoal’s mother. She has not been around other dogs. Also, described as friendly, shy at times, independent and affectionate.
Reaction to assessor: Ruby looks tense in her cage when approached by the assessor.
Reaction to door opening: Ruby remains hiding under her cage bedding, alert with eyes wide open.
Reaction to touch: Ruby accepts the stroke, but remains curled up in place with tail wrapped along the body and cautious with her surroundings.
Placement determination: Experience
Ruby tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful in the shelter.
We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents.
ENRICHMENT:

Ruby A1064697 (8 yo DSH) and Nicoal A1064698 (4 yo DSH) are both being surrendered because the owner recently moved into a new home and is not allowed to have more than one cat in the home. Ruby and Nicoal have never been to the vet and have no known health issues.
Socialization
Ruby is shy around strangers. She has not bitten anyone or any other animal.
Behavior
Ruby is litter box trained but will have accidents outside of the box at times. The owner described her as being “Territorial” due to her not being spayed and because she lives in the home with 2 other female cats that are not spayed as well. She does not mind baths or brushing. She likes to be wiped down. She does not like being restrained for nail trimming.
For a new family to know
Ruby was described as friendly, shy at times, independent and affectionate. She likes to be held and meows loudly around the house. She sleep anywhere in the house. She was fed alley cat dry cat food. She shared a litter box with the other cats in the home and used fresh step cat litter.
Behavior during intake
Ruby allowed to be handled-scanned(-) and collared. She allowed to be carried and placed on the backdrop where I positioned her for photos. Her little tongue would stick out and she would purr as I pet her. I transferred her back into her kennel. She did not resist or vocalize.
