Behavior::
KNOWN HISTORY:
Rubia was brought in as a stray, so we cannot speak to his behavior in his previous home.
MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:
Feral behavior. Biting, frantic escape behavior, recoiling from touch
ENRICHMENT NOTES:
06/08/17
Huddled in back of kennel with siblings. Hisses as my hand moves forward and tries to avoid contact, retreating and hissing while raising paw and swatting. Needs more time to adjust.
EVALUATION:
Cage Condition: Cage is re-arranged
Reaction to assessor: Rubia hissed when the assessor pulled up the cage cover.
Reaction when softly spoken to: Rubia continued hissing then retreated to the other side of the double kennel.
Reaction to cage door opening: Rubia hissed and started breathing more rapidly.
Reaction to touch: Rubia dodges and slinks away when the assessor tried interacting with him. He hisses, spits and swatted when the assessor extended his hand out. He tolerated very limited contact when approached slowly and was constantly hissing and trying to escape.
ACTIVITY LEVEL: Laid back
VOCAL: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: Skittish
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:
Fearful – Rubia has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus.
Kitten socialization – Rubia is a young cat that may not have had many interactions with humans from an early age. He may be apprehensive of people, but the behavior team believes he has potential to warm up to people. Kittens less than 8 weeks of age can be socialized by almost anyone; however, kittens between 2-4 months may require more time and skill in order for them to be comfortable around people. Please speak to an adoption counselor to learn more about socialization techniques.
RECOMMENDATIONS:
Experienced, adult home only – Rubia tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. He may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult
