08/30/2017 AT RISK MEMO
Romeo A1119874 is at-risk with an adult only determination. His previous owner reports he is shy and will hide around strangers. He initially displayed extreme signs of stress in the shelter, but has been showing signs of improvement on a daily basis. He meows softly and would solicit attention when approached, but still seems unsure. Although he rubs on the cage door, he becomes tense and focuses on the assessor when petting is attempted. He gives clear signs of discomfort, but will solicit attention again. We believe he has potential to warm up, but he is currently showing conflicting behaviors.

ENRICHMENT NOTES: 08/28/17 Sitting in center of kennel, tense and hissing. Growls, hisses and makes eye contact. Yowls and gives the bear-claw two hard swats as it reaches forward. Very uncomfortable – needs more time to adjust. 08/29/17 Sitting crouched in front of kennel. Flattens ears and hisses when spoken to. Yowls and stress meows loudly. He head-butts the kennel door when I open the treat bag. Likes treats. I click and reward each time he remains relaxed and sniffs my hand. I end the session when he loses interest in the treats. Responds well to food – will continue to clicker train. EVALUATION: Cage Condition: Cage is slightly re-arranged Reaction to assessor: Romeo was meowing softly and rubbing his entire body against the cage door. Reaction when softly spoken to: Romeo continues to vocalize with wide, dilated eyes and he rolls around the cage playfully. Reaction to cage door opening: Romeo pauses, then focuses on the assessor and lip licks. Reaction to touch: Romeo whines then leans his head in allowing gentle petting and rubs on his head. He’s very vocal and his tail starts to quiver as he brushes up against the assessor’s hand. He does seem conflicted and will whip around and hiss when pet for an extended period. Reaction to being picked up: Romeo was a bit tense when picked up but remained calm and allowed all handling. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Moderate VOCAL: Talkative CHARACTER TYPE: Demanding, Curious
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: Fearful – Romeo has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and may dislike certain types of handling. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experienced, adult home only – Romeo tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. He may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. He may have some behavioral issues that will need to be addressed in the home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home. No other cats OR multi-cat home with adopters experienced with introducing new cats – Romeo remains social and easy to handle with her human caretakers, but please be aware that Romeo may be uncomfortable around other cats. Their previous owner reports that he displays distance increasing behaviors whenever he sees another cat. Due to the described behaviors, we recommend Romeo goes to a home with no other cats OR into a multi-cat home with cat parents experienced with introducing new cats slowly and gradually over a long period of time.
