A1122813 Ricky – Ricky is at-risk with a NHO determination. His previous owner reports he is usually shy around strangers and will hide the whole time. He displays fearful behavior in the shelter and spends most of his time hiding inside his cat den. He hisses when approached for interaction and starts to growl. He continues to display distance-increasing behaviors during interaction and appears very uncomfortable.

08/21/17 16:43 Basic Information: Ricky is a 7 year old male that has no past or current medical issues that the owner is aware of. Owner has had Ricky for 7 years but had to surrender due to Ricky biting the owner. Socialization: According to the owner, around strangers Ricky is usually shy and will hide the whole time someone is over. He has never been around any small children so behavior is unknown. Owner had another male cat at one point and stated that Ricky was relaxed and respectful around the other animal. He has never been around dogs so behavior is unknown. Ricky has a bite history with the most recent bite being on 8/19/17. Behavior: Owner has never tried to bathe Ricky, trim his nails, brush his coat or disturb him while he is sleeping so behavior is unknown. When someone tries to pick Ricky up and hold him, he will struggle to run away. For a New Family to Know: Ricky is described as mellow, assertive, independent and talkative. He has a medium activity level and likes to play with wand toys and balls. In the home, depending on his mood, he would either follow the owner around from room to room or stay in his favorite spot. Ricky was kept indoors only and is litter box trained. In the home, he used a hooded litter box with clumping or crystals litter. Owner had a scratching post in the home made of twine and stated that Ricky would not use the scratching post but would scratch on the couch. Behavior during intake: Ricky has a stiff body and was growling during intake. Counselor was able to transfer from trap to den without any issues. Once in the den, Ricky began to hiss and growl. Limited handling was done.

KNOWN HISTORY: Lived Indoors Previously lived with: Adults Behavior toward strangers: According to the owner, around strangers Ricky is usually shy and will hide the whole time someone is over. Behavior toward children: unknown Behavior toward cats: Owner had another male cat at one point and stated that Ricky was relaxed and respectful around the other animal. Behavior toward dogs: Unknown Bite or Scratch history: Yes Litter box training: Yes Energy level/descriptors: Medium activity level, likes to play with wand toys and balls. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Did not allow handling, growling/hissing/attempting to bite, exam limited EVALUATION: Cage Condition: Cage is neat Reaction to assessor: Ricky is laying in his den motionless. Reaction when softly spoken to: Ricky continues to lay in his den. Through the holes in his den he makes eye contact with the assessor. Reaction to cage door opening: Ricky begins to growl and hiss while laying in his den. Reaction to touch: Ricky does not allow the assessor hand to pet his body without hissing or growling. His body is very tense and hard and he seems very uncomfortable. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Moderate VOCAL: Somewhat chatty CHARACTER TYPE: Timid, Independent, Bold RECOMMENDATIONS: -New Hope Only – Ricky is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. He has tried to swat, is extremely fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. He may have a known history of behavioral issues that need to be addressed. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
