BROOKLYN CENTER
Hello, my name is Ricky. My animal id is #18176. I am a female black cat at the Brooklyn Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 10 years old. – P
I came into the shelter as a aco impound on 12-Jan-2018.
Original Location: 10458
Ricky was placed at risk due to the behavior displayed at the shelter. Ricky stays in the back of the kennel and does not interact or solicit attention. becomes fearful as people approaches, Ricky will benefit from placement out side the shelter as soon as possible. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.

[Spay/Neuter Waiver – Age] It is the policy of ACC not to perform surgery on any animal over the age of 8-10 years due to the higher risks incurred in a shelter setting. The veterinarian is hereby issuing a permanent spay/neuter waiver, from the spay/neuter requirements of the City of NY due to the estimated age of this animal. ACC does recommend you consult with your veterinarian to determine if surgical sterilization is appropriate.
Details on my behavior are…
Behavior Condition: 2. Blue
KNOWN HISTORY:: Ricky was brought in as a stray, so we cannot speak to her behavior in her previous home.
MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:: 01/13/18 Tense for exam but allowed handling
ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 01/14/18 Lying on top of kuranda bed with a low, tense body. Follows my movements with wide eyes. She moves her head forward to sniff my hand, then tolerates petting along her head and shoulders briefly before turning head around to watch my hand and hissing, ears flattening. Sniffs the treats I place down but doesn’t eat them during interaction – too focused on me. Needs more time to adjust. 01/16/18 Curled up in the back of the kennel. Low body posture, ears bend flat. Her pupils dilate, whiskers fan out and she lip licks when spoken to softly. Retreats to the other side of the double kennel when the door opens. She seems unsure of her surroundings, but slowly leans forward to sniff my hand. She quickly backs away, her ears bend flat and she hisses when touched on her head. Her body starts to tremble and she shifts away to the other side of the kennel to avoid contact. Needs more time to adjust. 01/17/18 Sitting upright in back of kennel, eyes wide and alert and ears forward. Steps forward hesitantly to sniff the bear-claw, then leans away and squints eyes closed when touched, ears tilting. Unsure. Not interested in treats at the moment. Needs more time to adjust to adjust.
Cage Condition:: Cage is neat
Reaction to assessor:: Ricky was tense and crouched in the back of the kennel with her tail curled up at her side.
Reaction when softly spoken to:: Ricky’s pupils dilate, her whiskers fan out and she lip licks when spoken to softly.
Reaction to cage door opening:: Ricky retreats to the other side of the double kennel.
Reaction to touch:: Ricky seems unsure of her surroundings, but slowly leans forward to sniff the assessor’s hand. She quickly backs away, her ears bend flat and she hisses when touched on her head. Her body starts to tremble and she shifts away to the other side of the kennel to avoid contact.
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Laid back
VOCAL:: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: : Skittish,Independent
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful
Potential challenges comments:: Ricky has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and may dislike certain types of handling. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide her with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Experienced, adult only
Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable
RECOMMENDATIONS:: None
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Ricky tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. She may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to her new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
