ENRICHMENT NOTES:
05/11/18
Pressed up against the back wall of the kennel, trying to scale the wall to avoid contact. Very uncomfortable. Breathes rapidly when approached. Tolerates petting with slow approach. Wasn’t interested in treats, and wouldn’t come forward when coaxed. Needs more time to adjust.
05/13/18
Lying in back of kennel, body low and tense. Makes eye contact when spoken to, face also tense. Tolerates petting along head and body while looking around the room, then darting away from my hand. Not too interested in treats at the moment. Nervous and unsure, needs more time to adjust.
Cage Condition:
Cage is neat
Reaction to assessor:
Ralph was curled up by the back corner of his kennel, alert upon approach.
Reaction when softly spoken to:
Ralph lifts his rear, but lies back down. He focuses on the assessor and appears unsure.
Reaction to cage door opening:
Ralph becomes tense and presses his body further into the back corner.
Reaction to touch:
Ralph was hesitant of touch, but sniffs the assessor’s hand when placed in front of him. He looks away and allows petting, lip licking. After a moment, his eyes soften and eventually closes them while the assessor pets him gently all over.
ACTIVITY LEVEL:
Mellow
VOCAL:
Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE:
Shy
Curious
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:
Fearful
Potential challenges comments:
Ralph has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and appears uncomfortable with extended handling. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:
Experience
Behavior Asilomar
TM – Treatable-Manageable
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:
Ralph tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter. He may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents.
