MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:: Observed Behavior – TRIES TO FLEE
ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 12/17/17 Lying in back of kennel with a low, tense body. He tolerates petting along his head and body while titling his ears and looking around the room. Avoids eye contact. “Frozen stiff” – fearful. Needs some more time to adjust. Not interested in treats today. 12/18/17 Lying in litterbox with a low, tense body. He makes eye contact and flattens his ears when spoken to. He flinches when touched with the bear-claw and tolerates petting along his head and body while remaining very still, eyes looking around the room. Uncomfortable. Not interested in treats at the moment. Needs more time to adjust. 12/19/17 Lying in litterbox with a low, tense body. Makes and maintains eyes contact as I open the kennel door, ears flattening. He tolerates petting along his head and body while slowly turning his head to watch my hand, ears flat and whiskers pulled back. Not interested in treats today. Needs more time to adjust.
Cage Condition:: Cage is neat
Reaction to assessor:: Quicksilver was inside his litter box with a low body posture.
Reaction when softly spoken to:: Quicksilver looks at the assessor briefly, and then averts his gaze and appears tense.
Reaction to cage door opening:: Quicksilver remains motionless.
Reaction to touch:: Quicksilver focuses on the assessor’s hand, but remains immobile and allows soft strokes on his head and body. He appears uncomfortable and his body is tense, but he does not display any further reaction.
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Mellow
VOCAL:: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: : Timid,Skittish,Independent
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful
Potential challenges comments:: Quicksilver has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and appears uncomfortable with extended handling. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Experienced, adult only
Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Quicksilver tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. He may be more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home and family. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
