12/12/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Pumpkin’s previous owner reports he has lived with one adult and a child in the home. He was relaxed and playful with the child, engaging in gentle play. Pumpkin has never been around other cats or dogs and is fearful when taken outside and will meow and cry. He isn’t bothered when brushed and likes to be picked up and held. The owner says he is an independent cat, but loves attention on his time. Reaction to assessor: Pumpkin was resting inside his den upon approach. Reaction when softly spoken to: Pumpkin looks out from the opening and has almond-shaped eyes, blinking softly. Reaction to cage door opening: Pumpkin becomes alert and looks around. Reaction to touch: Pumpkin was hesitant of contact, sniffing around the assessor’s hand but shifting away from it whenever it comes close to him. He shifts deeper inside his den, hissing loudly and starting to growl. He does not allow contact, hissing and focusing on the assessor’s hand with his ears flattened against his head. Behavior Determination: New Hope Only Pumpkin is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. He is extremely fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
