Hello, my name is Puffin. My animal id is #12664. I am a desexed male black cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 9 years old.
I came into the shelter as a stray on 14-Nov-2017.
Puffin is at risk for behavior, New Hope Only determination. Puffin hasn’t allowed any handling while in the care center. Please note that Puffin is declawed, however there are no known medical conditions for Puffin at this time.

Behavior Condition: 4. Orange
Basic Information:: Cat was hissing and growling.
KNOWN HISTORY:: Puffin was brought in as a stray, so we don’t have any behavioral history or tendencies in a home environment.
MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:: Observed Behavior -hissing, growling
ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 11/15/17 Declawed on front, matted. In den on approach, peeking through holes, eyes dilated. Lay in place when door opened, crouched down out of sight, started growling. Hissed and spat when given treats, growled louder. Sprayed thunderease. 11/16/17 In den on approach, peeking through holes, eyes dilated. Started hissing and growling when spoken to. Spat when offered treats. Screamed and swatted from inside den when touched. Sprayed thunderease.
Cage Condition:: No change
Reaction to assessor:: Puffin remains tense, crouched position hiding in the cat den.
Reaction when softly spoken to:: Puffin remains alert with dilated eyes and began to growl.
Reaction to cage door opening:: Puffin remains in place, cautious with his surroundings, peaking from the den.
Reaction to touch:: Puffin does not allow any contact, hisses and spits at the assessor’s hand while attempting to get close to the den.
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Laid back
VOCAL:: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: : Bold,Timid,Independent
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : New hope only
Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Puffin is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. He is stressed in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
